Portal season has begun

The problem is your portal guy has to learn your offense, particularly an offense like Heupel's which isn't a "cookie cutter" offense.

Granted, "non skill" positions won't have much of a problem but getting a "plug and play" connection between a QB and WR isn't guaranteed. Timing matters on lots of routes and isn't just "there" on day one.

We did very well with Joey A but it's pretty obvious we've seen QBs struggle to pick up Heupel's offense.

Guys being together and bonding as a team matters even in this mercenary era of college football.
Thought one of the plusses of Heupel's secret sauce was it's simplicity? Kinda confused.

Still, in the preseason most of our WR's sat due to injuries. Couldn't develop chemistry and timing. So if a freshman has skills, he should be able to do just as well as our Charmin wideouts no?

Simplicity in the play design, yes, but the reads are different and the pace can be a problem. As I understand it, Heupel wants to exploit the D with both pace and quick reads by the QB. From there, the routes and plays themselves aren't complex.

Not every QB is built for Heupel's offense. Even, it seems, the ones he selects for his offense may struggle.

So the WRs and QBs need to be smarter. Truth.

This is going to be an absolute bloodbath. Many new coaches with big bags of NIL money and the players can smell the fact competition will drive NIL up substantially. Under this system every current player should take a look to find their value on the open market. Team loyalty is out the window, it's about the money now just like the old gold rush days.
Kiffin reminded everyone that the coaches are certainly in it for themselves. So, is there any reason that players shouldn't be? Add to that coaches who "process" players on to other opportunities to make room for the incoming portaleers. Loyalty to the school is sadly a quaint and old fashioned idea that will rarely work in this environment.

This was the same complaint from the "bag man" days. We always said "they paid them" when Alabama recruited highly but the real truth was "they outbid us."

The money is much higher now but the schools that are able and willing to pay more, just as it's always been, will be successful. There are a few different schools paying now but a lot of the usual suspects are right there.

Nice things, like elite football teams, cost money. They always have and always will. If we're trying to do it "on the cheap" it's not going to go well for us. Phil Fulmer did not win at UT from an empty bag.

Wonder how much we are paying these guys who never see the field, only for them to hit the portal? Seems like money thrown down the toilet.
It’s not much but it’s required. Who thought Ty Redmond would be a starter at Cb? Nobody but Ty.

This back and forth on coaches getting theirs is what started this evolution, Sabin to Bama. Then the players got theirs and it's been back and forth ever since, where does it stop?

Said it in another post, but loyalty is a fan concept only. The rest of this shhhhtuff is all business. Nothing more, nothing less. If SW Wyoming Mining College for Under Privileged Kids showed up with $20M a year for Heupel, he would be gone. There are some instances where I think loyalty from a coach is still in play and that’s GA Tech with Brent Key and Clark Lea at Vandy. Those are their schools, their Alma Mater…..but even then, you just never know.

Wish them luck.

Hopefully Heupel and staff can get some actual football players this year, not a bunch of marshmallows who get whipped by Candy on sacred grounds. Shameful

There's hype and belief in Kiffin. Nothing but uncertainty across the board at UT. Anyone on our roster might jump....anyone.

Truly @CAVPUT I dont know how you do it - packing that much negativity and willful ignorance into a single user account. You are special indeed!

The most important pick up we can get in the portal is not in the portal. He is not listed by any recruiting service, although they admire his work. He is known for his commitment to winning, his physical style of play, and his ability to make plays. He is widely respected amongst his peers. He plays DC.

I hate this. All of it. The coaching carousel, the NIL deals, the portal chaos all just drive costs and expectations to unreal levels. The only real "players" are the schools that seem to have unlimited resources (LSU, Ohio State, et al). Everyone else is just gonna be hoping everything can come together for one magical season.
You just described LSU in that last sentence to a T.
2019 was their last magical season.
Haven’t sniffed anything since then.
So how can they be one of the real players?

I ran across a post by a Ole Miss fan a couple days ago that I think summed it up pretty well. It basically read as "Coaches ditch the school whenever they get ready for whatever they think is a better situation. Players constantly jump from one school to another as soon as more money is offered or something doesn't go their way. The only ones who are expected to be loyal are the fans, who are expected to show up, spend their money and support the team no matter what".

Because of the money they are throwing at Kiffin to build them a program. They are one of the schools where "cost is no object". Just because they got the wrong fit with BK won't stop them. Look at T&M, they gave a ton of $ to Jimbo. When that didn't work they are still spending till they get it right. TN cannot or will not play that game. It's not a criticism, it's just the way it is. The big money schools' maxim is, "if at first things don't go your way, spend more cash!"

There are plenty of schools spending tons of money and haven’t won anything yet.
Money alone doesn’t equal wins
