Looks like they’ll be electing a new Pope soon. It’ll be interesting to see what direction they go. Worldwide countries are moving right

It’ll be a long, long, long time before they ever elevate another Cardinal like Francis. I have a feeling the Catholic Church is gonna clap back hard with this next Pontiff.

I think the criteria for Francis had a big geographic component - they wanted to reach out to the Americas. They may go for a European conservative.

They aren’t going to elect a Pope that’s in favor of us using any bathroom we chose? His pronouns will be he/him? Shocking.

Man, going all out out and making a pedo-protector pope was a bold move.

Is there inherent bias within the catholic church regarding an american pope? aside from him being the first, why is it surprising an american pope was elected?

They've always feared this would be the way the new American Pope would greet the masses upon being introduced on his balcony

I think it just stems from the United States being such an outsized influence on the world (especially after the Cold War), and by extension, the Catholic Church, that they shied away from having an American Pope.

There was also a reputation that American papabili weren't international enough (didn't speak enough languages, etc.) although this guy they just elected speaks 5 or 6. He also lived in Peru for a while and is a Peruvian citizen - not a Catholic but I wonder if that helped ease some concerns about him being "too American."
