The Iranian Fordo nuclear facility is buried deep in the ground (~250-300 feet) to prevent damage from normal bombs. The US has developed a penetrator bomb that is 30,000 lbs and can only be delivered by our B2 bombers. Thus, Israel really has no way to use it. Given the current war, they've asked us to use such a weapon to, potentially, ensure that the Fordo Facility is neutralized. But if we do bomb it, we're part of the war. Plus, such bombs may not actually work in this situation.

What do we do?

Edit: Of note, Fordo is nestled between 2 other Iranian towns, Pinto and Volvo. The Pentagon advises not hitting Pinto from the rear.

I think Iran having nuclear capabilities is a problem regardless if you’re a dem, republican, independent, etc. I also think we’re the only one with a solution to the problem that doesn’t involve boots on the ground right away; I would guess Israel could theoretically go in and destroy the facility from the inside. I don’t want to be involved but I’m not sure I see a solution other than involvement at this point. The alternative of allowing them to develop nuclear weapons isn’t an option.

I think we probably do bomb the facility regardless of what anyone thinks we should do. All signs point to this.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Israel hasn’t spent the last decade developing their own upgraded bunker buster.
The good news is that we don’t necessarily have to make this decision immediately as long as Israel maintains air superiority.
A land assault is also an option as long as they control the skies but of course risky to the soldiers involved

Am I the only one who doesn’t have strong feelings here?

If we let Israel deal with it, okay.
If we fly one mission and are done, okay.
If we use the threat as reason to get them back to the table, okay.

I don’t see any of those as terrible or catastrophic
And we have time to see what might develop. The best case scenario is the Iranian people solve this problem for us on their own

Pinto?

We're overthinking it. Just hit Pinto from behind and the resulting explosion will take care of the nearby facility.

I chose pie...for obvious reasons but also because there wasnt a choice that accurately represents how I feel. The facility has to be destroyed. I don't WANT our pilots to do the job, but Israeli pilots aren't trained to fly any of the aircraft which can deliver the ordinance from what I understand. So the options appear to be:

1. Israel destroys the site using ground forces and/or espionage OR

2. We bomb the site.

I very much prefer option #1...but if they are unwilling to do so themselves then we need to take care of it. Under no circumstances can Iran be left with working enrichment sites nor a stockpile of already enriched uranium. They cannot be allowed to possess nuclear weapons.

Mostly agree with this, as usual with your posts. However...negotiations with Iran should be off the table. They have proven repeatedly that they are 100% FOS and are gonna continue to develop a weapon and enrich uranium regardless of what they say. To negotiate with this regime is a fools errand and i think thats obvious to anyone who has paid attention to their history. The sites and enriched uranium must be destroyed one way or another and whatever regime takes power needs to be watched very carefully in the future.

Flying one mission is the equivalent of sending advisers to Vietnam. These things invariably get out of control. If the plane has mechanical failure and the pilot has to eject….then what??? We have no business being involved in this.
