That's funny! All the sorry-ass Pearl lovers coming out of the woodwork after today's game. Where ya been all season!

Edit: I forgot the why part. Because Pearl ain't nothin' but a carnival barker and a snake oil salesman!
This
I've held my nose and pulled for him like I have for certain players (football mostly) over the years. Stereotyping he reminds me of a lot of the sleazy mafia hanger on's with the slightly oily hair and loud fast talking antics. When he doesn't know what to do coaching wise he just turns around to the crowd and becomes a male cheerleader. Never pulled against him when he was here and loved some of the outcomes but didn't hurt my feelings when he was gone. All but the big hole he dug for the Vols but theirs some that still love him and bring a poll like this right before the SEC..... SMH..

Don't really like this poll. Barnes is the man and I'm perfectly happy with it. Having said that, these kind of discussion kind of go with the territory when your former coach out coaches your current coach.

I remember quite a few posters on Volnation after Bruce Pearl was hired by Auburn said that they would root for Auburn in Men's Basketball instead of Tennessee because they didn't like Tennessee head coach Donnie Tyndall.

I notice the Pearl haters never mention that Pearl has a national championship under his belt. That said, Barnes is our coach now and he should have our full support. Pearl is history, great ride, but so is the ride we are now on.

Now compare how many tourney appearances each has to get those numbers? Not like it’s even. I’m no Barnes basher but your argument lacks major context.
Sure...

Barnes has made the NCAAT 69% of his years as a head coach, Pearl 46%.

Barnes has made the Sweet 16 19% of his years as a head coach, Pearl 13%.

Barnes has made the Elite 8 6% of his years as a head coach, Pearl 4%.

Barnes has made the Final Four 3% of his years as a head coach, Pearl 0%.

Well done. I was curious how those numbers translated apples to apples.

Why would we mention a division II national championship from 1995 at Southern Indiana. He had already figured out how to buy players from his assistant coaching experience in the 80's at Iowa. With the Division II scholarship limitations back then, you could probably buy an entire roster of the most talented players on that level, with no worry of any scrutiny from the governing body, for the going price of one Javonte Smart. Do you really want to open up that can of worms?

The Pearl years were very special. Ioved his enthusiasm and I really enjoyed the style of play the first 4 years. Even UK fans were envious, fast break, raining 3 pointers, full court press most of the game. It was really fun to watch from the underdog role taking down Florida, Texas, Memphis, UK...so many big games. I think he started reaching for the sun after that and got burned going after the 5 star players and changing to more defensive half court style. The last 2 years were miserable, bad style of play then all of the problems with the NCAA. Pearl was not the greatest coach but what he lacked he made up for in positive energy that made UT basketball not only relevant but exciting.
Barnes is the opposite, real knowledge of the game and ability to transform whatever he has into a competitive unit. He is a professional in every aspect of the game. UT admins should take notice and hire coaches with solid experience in the job they will be required to perform. This formula will always pay dividends.

Pearl is better post season

Barnes is better regular season (except for when he had Durant)
10000% disagree with that assessment. Pearl’s teams always play a run and gun style full court press that wears them down over the duration of a season. He usually has a couple of important players out by tournament time. Also, pearls teams always rely on the 3 point shot. And it’s difficult to rely on that to win day in and day out. Having a solid inside/mid range along with playing good defense is the key to being a consistent team. You live by the 3...you’ll die by the 3.
And proof is in the pudding. Pearl has had some really good regular season teams but he never makes deep tournament runs. Barnes meanwhile has made it deep in the tourney.

I've watched them a few times in wins and losses this season. That team is in a crazed 3pt attack or slash to the rack & dump to another 3. It's not solid offense. By design this team can win most any game and will drop quickly out of the ncaat as well.

Edit:. CBP knows thier is not solid paint play, so they are going this gunslinger route bc he has the athletes to do it
Mid major ball. The scheme is not sound. I've learned over the years that a coach that stands and hollers at his team the entire game is not doing something in practice and/or is not getting through to them.

Also, go back to Pearl's teams and you will find "EVERY" year he had a player kicked off and sometimes multiple. It was fun but it was Cincinnati South (or insert any undisciplined team here) and his personal character led the way.

Bottom Line is that This team with CRB Lost to 4 identified Cheaters, (Self, Calipari, Wade, & Pearl) Blue Blood programs 2 Losses. Plus 2 Liars that thought they knew how to work the system.

Its quiet obvious the Blue Blood Coaches know what "plausible Deniability" means and the other 2 did not....So they lied....

This needs to be broke down per season to carry any weight. Pearl has only been a D1 coach for about 12 or 13 years. Barnes has at least twice that maybe more.
15 years, to be exact. Barnes has 33 years. Twice the time in D1 coaching, and twice the accomplishments.

And again, it wasn't meant to prove that Barnes is a better postseason coach. It was meant to disprove that Pearl is clearly a better postseason coach. In fact, the numbers suggest they are pretty close to equal from a results standpoint.

Pearl is only good in the postseason if his team is considered the underdog. His 2 best teams at UT as far as NCAAT seeding underachieved in the NCAAT. His 2 best NCAAT performing teams were considered underdogs. And then had 2 one and dones, with the last one not even really counting since they were sleepwalking.

So this notion that Pearl is great in the postseason is some orange colored glasses nostalgia.

I do want to say that I agree with many others that this poll is dumb. I have commented in the thread but I didn't vote on what is a stupid poll. There is always one in the group.

Diversity of thought is important though. Unfortunately, it does mean we got idiots seem contrary to logical thought. Why else would socialist exist in this country?

Excerpt from CBS Sports story today:

Winner: Auburn's starring role as spoiler
Tennessee and Auburn shared last season's SEC regular season title. That was not on the table this year for the Tigers. What was an option, however, was potentially spoiling the Vols' shot at winning the SEC this season.
Put another way: Bruce Pearl had a chance to lead Auburn to an upset over his former employer, where he coached from 2005-2011.
The Tigers happily did their head coach a solid. Auburn upset No. 5 Tennessee 84-80 on Saturday, giving Bruce Pearl a nice taste of revenge. He held his punches afterwards though, taking the high road with praise for the Vols.
"That was a great college basketball team. Tennessee is a championship program," he said. "Everybody realizes Tennessee is a Final Four team. Everyone now also realizes that Auburn is capable of beating, and just did beat, a Final Four team."

Pearl’s teams fold up in the NCAA’s. I still love him but there is no comparison in coaching quality. Pearl also has recruiting lapses and he cannot coach up his players like Barnes.

You can come up with all the made up scenarios you want, but the fact remains he won a national championship I know he screwed up here but that doesn't change the fact that he is a good coach.

Coach Barnes has the respect of his peers while always displaying class. He's a great mentor to young men and recruits only the highest character young men. Not a single problem from any of his players. Coach Pearl is a likable high energy guy that displays good coaching abilities; however, he is slightly tainted by his past no matter how small of an incident. I'll take coach Barnes all day.

Barnes is a better program builder and gives us stability, overall I would rather have Barnes, but for one big game Pearl might be the best, he is such a great motivator. Since I have to choose one I vote Barnes, he has integrity, character. paearl whom I love has a used car salesman mentality or snake oil salesman.
Or BBQ pit master😒
