but the players don't call three runs that lose yards and then call a screen or otherwise terribly executed play.

He has to know we don't execute them very well at all yet calls them over and over.
But it also doesn't do any good to call a pass play if Your receivers can't catch the ball.

My theory is that he doesn't really gameplan and he starts to gameplan as the game the goes on. Constantly making adjustment quarter by quarter. That's where his strengths are. It makes the defense looser too, knowing their isn't really a gameplan. You just do your job.

I would say it has more to do with teams creating a game plan that is effective for one half and then CBS adjusts his defense to disrupt their game plan and other offensive coaches simply can't adapt in the second half. He probably starts off very vanilla to see what other coaches are planning on implementing and he is very good at adjusting.

I honestly think Shoop is a genius and it takes him a few drives to process what's going to work best. I'm not kidding lol. The dude has an Ivy League degree!

Bob Shoop has been a defensive genius starting at Vanderbilt, then, on to Penn State and now, we're blessed to have him. He totally understands defensive schemes in today's collegiate football. He's also a master at getting the right personnel on the field at the correct time. I hope he's here a long time, but, at some point, sooner rather than later, count on some major programs to come knockin' with a head coaching job offer. The Vols had better be ready to start stacking money and "Say when....".

During the Florida game CBS showed Shoop and Debord sitting next to each other. Shoop is obviously great with defensive adjustments. Is there any possibilities that Shoop is picking up on the opposing teams defensive tendencies as well? And passing that over to Debord for play calling purposes. That might explain some of the offensive adjustments this year as well.
That's a good call! I've been thinking the same thing. If the O is ran correctly we will be very hard to stop

so good with the 2nd half adjustments yet the D continues to start so slowly each game? Pregame planning can't be more difficult than on the fly adjustments during the game? I can't arrive at a reasonable explanation as to why the D struggles out of the gate.

Tightening the screws as the game goes along
