FreakNotes (from my phone so be gentle)

Reeves-Maybin
-JRM says Barnett has gotten a lot quicker. Says the defense overall is faster and more athletic.
-Bituli and Blakely are two of the biggest linebackers, which is odd considering they are the youngest.
-With only two linebackers on the field, it's hard for some of the younger guys to get on the field but they are very capable.
-The defense is definitely more athletic, especially with the guys back upfront who were out last year.

Cam Sutton
-It's been a healthy competition at corner. We have a lot of depth in the secondary, including safety.
-All of our corners and nickels are stepping up making plays, safety's as well. Everyone is embracing their role.
-Will continue to do returns on this team. Embracing whatever role the coaches have for him.
-He's seen a lot of amazing things so far from the guys up front. Excited about that group.
-He has returned kicks before but Evan does a great job. We practice every special teams every single day.

Dobbs
-Young guys are pushing some of the older guys.
-Have to finish games strong this year.
-On the young wide receivers, they have a hunger to learn and want to make an impact early.
-Aiming for 65-70% completion percentage.
-Field position is crucial, obviously don't want to take sacks.
-Taking hits in the pocket can be worse than taking hits while running, since you don't always see the guys when in the pocket.
-Tyler Byrd has been playing WR since he got here. He's making plays at practice.
-Excited to see the competition on the o-line. The best five guys will be out there. They are pushing each other.
-To protect the ball, don't run bad plays into bad defenses.
-As one of the four captains, wants to hold the offense to a high standard.
-The offensive install is a lot quicker this year, having veteran guys. Pushing the tempo.
-Likes the approach of the younger quarterbacks. All watch film together.
-In the off season he ate more and lifted more to get a bit bigger this year. Hasn't gained much weight but added muscle mass.
-Excited to see the progress of Kongbo, to see his physicality was huge. We think we have the best defensive line in the country.

More later.

Love Hurd's confidence. When asked who the best RB in the SEC is, he said "We'll find out after this year." He truly believes he's the best, I think he'll show that he's right there with Fournette. I can't wait to see him play this year.

Hurd is a powerful RB but seems to get caught from behind on what should be breakaway TD runs. Granted, he is still making big plays it just seems as though his top end speed is a little low or he expends too much energy getting into open space (the OL has improved but he still has had to fight harder than most for every yard)

Think he was saying he has higher goals and expectations for himself than being a "normal person."

No he wasn't. He was saying that he hasn't had a chance to evaluate his football health because he hasn't started really hitting/being hit yet. He meant that if he were a regular person not involved in a full contact sport, he'd definitely be 100% healthy at this point, as he feels no pain/limitation in his daily activities of living.

Gotcha. Thx.

For a guy sitting on the couch eating Cheetos and watching TV he is 100%, being normal don't cut it to be a linebacker for Team 120.

Yeah that's what he's been working on this offseason. If he improves that this year like he says he has, he may be the best back in college football. That is literally all that is missing from his game. He can do everything else

I'm guessing that's why he worked on that over the off season. Maybe you missed the 250+ lb one legged squats and the 23 mph inclined treadmill videos.

He knew where he needed to improve and went out and worked on it, We'll find out soon enough if it worked.

Should we start looking for another back?
I wouldn't trade him for any back in the country. Period. I don't think we have seen his top end speed anyway. I don't even care. It's not a one man offensive show and he doesn't have to the fastest player on the field. That being said, he might be the fastest 240+lb Running Back we've ever seen. Is that not good enough? I'm sure he would like to apologize for not working hard enough to meet the extreme expectations of all Tennessee fans.

When I project greatness for guys like Hurd and Dobbs, it's not just because of their play on the field. Its also because of what I've seen of their personality off the field.

Both are intense competitors. And they have absolute confidence in their ability. Its guys with that type of fire in their eyes that typically keep improving while their peers level off.

Since I'm a butthead I'm going to have to correct you. 255lb one leg squats with* chains* each weighing at least 20-25 lbs. So probably right at 300lbs. And he did one workout at 19.5mph incline on a treadmill and different one at 23 mph on a flat treadmill. But I'm just nitpicking because I'm bored ;)

Make two more posts, then start a thread about it.

See Freak. I'm still working on getting your post counts up. You may need to think about putting me on commission soon. :)

I think young Hurd had what we used to say umpires in baseball had, "rabbit ears" about his being soft or not a tough guy from his high school days, that was supposedly the dig on him. You see over and over again where there were opportunities for Jalen to juke somebody and he instead was looking to make some contact. My mama nor cousins work at the Hendersonville DQ so know I have no special double secret probation connections to claim with the Hurd family, just my observation. Watching Jalen today during the presser I saw a young man comfortable and confident with himself and I could be mistaken but with the attitude he knows what's going on and has nothing to prove. THAT comes with maturity and I think we'll see a slightly different Hurd taking the field this year and we could very well see him break a few more long ones than looking to break a couple of noggins.
