I had hoped we could keep Cade and JP because they would be the guys that could continued selling the culture that had been passed on to them. I don’t see anyone else on the roster that could do it .lIt wasn’t the determining factor that caused people to come but I think it was helpful in the good team chemistry we had over the years . The veterans helped the new guys adjust.
It was probably going to come to an end any way very quickly with NIL but we as fans will have to adjust to to thinking more like pro fans . There will be a lot more “what have you done for me lately “j

Yeah, I can understand that. I think Cade Phillips was more of a culture guy than Estrella, but it will be a bit of a challenge to adapt losing them both. If we can keep a guy like Boswell or Evans, they will probably bring it. It’s helpful to have though

Judging by Estrella’s announcement he’s already agreed to terms somewhere. Sounds like they still are trying with Cade.

Evan’s possibly going to the portal as well but for sure Bishop!

Its not even pro ball at least you have contracts and get to watch your drafted talent stay 4-5 years before going free agency.

I was concerned this past season with how the culture would transfer, but by the end of the season the guys were close as I've seen.

I think you have to recruit the right type of guys, which Barnes has done a fairly good job as. I also think if you can find an experienced transfer who grew up in Tennessee like Chaz Lanier and Jakobi Gilespe it helps tremendously. Guys that value the Power T and are grateful for the opportunity to wear it.

Barnes also does an overseas summer trip and early season tournament to help build team chemistry.

So, yeah, I understand the concern, but there are also ways you can combat that too and I think we have the staff and environment to give us an edge over other programs in this department.

Three straight elite 8s led in large part by one year guys that came in via the portal and made huge impacts.

Hard to argue that we should be going in the opposite direction of that.

Eh, two of those years were made by plugging important contributors into a well-oiled machine that had multiple years of experience in Barnes' system. Especially two junior/senior guards who knew the plan inside and out. We don't really have that anymore, and with 4/5/6-whatever guys hitting the road, we'll have even less of that continuity next year.

Adding key contributors to a mostly-complete roster is one thing. Assembling new rosters every year out of whatever is the suck.

Watching MI-UConn championship, they said all five MI starters came via transfer, so it can be done but you have to get the right group of players.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY NOW DAYS
It’s pretty much always been about money, it’s just that the players are getting money now too. Cant blame them for taking advantage of the chance to make life changing money. However, not every player enters the portal for more money. Some leave for playing time, some leave for a different location, or a new coach, some leave for a system, etc etc. not every player leaves just for more money.

I used to talk to some Kentucky fans and ask how they could pull for a team full of guys that come and play for 1 year and are gone (Calipari 5 star freshmen). Now it looks like it’s going to be that way everywhere. It looks like whoever spends the most wins the most. Michigan just won with a team that started 5 transfers. Unless they put in a salary cap, money wins.

How many you folks tired of seeing recruits pledge they love tn. Vols and the coaches, but boom they up and leave. If they can't stick to commitment it should.cost them in some way, payback or sit for season like it always was, will stop the portal stupidity

I think players will lead the culture (for good or bad), but the VFL concept is done. Vol For Now has been the reality for a while. That’s really too bad.
Have to agree with this but sadly. I really thought Barnes had a good culture to keep players together but as others have said, the open portal and $ have killed it. Karen for the LV's softball team may still have some LV culture left, hope so.

From where I sit, NIL has destroyed college sports. That said, if you want to compete, you must be able to play the portal/NIL game and win more than you lose.

We are obviously losing. I don’t think Barnes knows how to play the NIL/portal game…or just finds it too detestable to stomach. It seems he might still be living in the game as it was a few years ago. And we are in a adapt-or-perish period, it appears.

To me, it seems obvious that we need to add more than a couple shooters/scoring to our roster. To do that, we must play the portal/NIL game and win. I just don’t see that happening. The Elite Eight might just be our ceiling with Barnes.

Nah, don’t discount the current generation of kids too much. They’re facing things we’ve never imagined and dealing with it all publicly / world-wide. They’re gonna be okay and so will sports. They’ve never experienced college sports any other way. It’s their first time.

It’s us, the fans and older generations, that are over…until we adapt our fandom.

This would exhaust me if I were a coach.

However, there are people who would love the game of trying to make it work, the "chaos" and the challenge.

It's going to be interesting seeing how these coaches deal with players who make as much or more than them. That's a significant change.

Who cares about culture? I’d much rather have a championship team.
