I know many positions are up in the air as to who will start at respective positions and it sounds like the best practicers will probably get the nod.

Here's what I hope doesn't happen. I hope guys don't get overlooked or punished because they aren't the best performer in practice "artifical" situations.

For example....I hope to see the ones competing for MLB get roughly the same amount of reps in the opener. See what they can do ON THE FIELD IN REAL GAME SITUATIONS. That's where talents and instincts show up that sometimes and often times don't show up in practice settings.

Please use the BGSU game to further settle these disputes.

Best current example is Josh Dobbs and he being passed over because of his lousy practice performances. Had Worley stayed healthy, the Dobbs secret would've never been discovered.

The "coaching" and "game time decision making" of this staff are the critical questions moving into this season.

He said he will put the best players on the field. Period. Well, put them all on the field (not like Dooley all at the same time) and give them a chance and the disputes will settle themselves.

You learn by playing and ****ing up. Not by standing and watching.

You really have no clue do you? You don't think that CBJ will put in the 2nd and 3rd teams after a big lead? That's what coaches do genius....

I don't get where all the Dobbs is bad in practice stuff is coming from. First I heard was when someone asked him about his "bad practice efforts" at Media Days a couple weeks ago. He looked like he took offense to it. I haven't seen any more of practice than the next guy but I bet a lot of people making those comments haven't seen any either.

Its been noted several times that Butch and Dobbs family wanted him to redshirt at least one of the past 2 seasons. Due to injury, he couldn't. It wasn't that Butch just discovered a "secret", Dobbs had played well in several scrimmages.

I think we should allow 2 fans from the stands to suit up each series. Maybe we'll find a diamond in the rough who the recruiting services overlooked

Accept the fact that the fans weren't offered scholarship to play d1 major college football in the most powerful conference in the nation. However, the ones recruited to do just that need to be given a respectable chance to show what they have. Standing and watching doesn't always equate to greatness for contributing.

So, we reward the players that half-ass it through practice? That should make the team better.

It was repeatedly reported by multiple insiders last off season when the QB competition was open. Dobbs was inconsistent in practice and didn't win the starting job. Doesn't mean that he couldn't develop that consistency. And doesn't mean that he didn't bring an element to the offense that Worley couldn't provide.

They are given the the chance to show what they have by working hard in practice and possible reps when there is a lead. Sometimes, redshirtting is also a thing.

If someone won't work hard in practice, why should they be rewarded anything over those who will? Or are you one o' them 'give trophies to everyone so they feel good' fellers?

As far as I know this Dobbs bad in practice nonsense is nothing but message board drivel.

Come on Guys. . .

"After UT’s first scrimmage last Saturday, Dobbs admitted he has struggled with accuracy issues. He mentioned Thursday his biggest setback has been an ability to string good plays together." [Last Fall Camp]

Competition continues for Nathan Peterman, Joshua Dobbs - GoVolsXtra Story

"“He needs to work on it. It was not what we needed,” Jones said Monday afternoon when asked about Dobbs’ Sunday practice performance. “And again, it’s easy to write things when you watch a game or two, but we see it every day in practice. And that’s a lot different. And Josh knows it: For us to be successful, he has to play with great consistency day-in and day-out, and that’s his biggest challenged.

“Josh understands that. We work it each and every day. We talk about it. But we need much more consistency — and not just from him, but if it’s Nate Peterman, or whoever’s our quarterback, just being able to make the routine plays.

...It’s the overall consistency [that’s lacking], with his elbow, with how he releases the ball, with his feet. You throw with your feet, setting in the pocket, throwing a catchable football."

"And he’s improved tremendously from the start of August camp to where he is now, and that’s a great compliment to him." [After replacing Worley]

Butch Jones still pushing Tennessee Vols football's Joshua Dobbs

Yes. Not just insiders. Media guys and just watching practice videos you could see inconsistency in passing early last year.

Remember Dobbs was more or less fourth string in 2013. He didn't even travel to Florida. He played out of absolute necessity at the end of the year.

In 2014 (edited), it was more inconsistency. One journalist in fall camp wondered out loud (in writing) if he'd ever be good enough. It wasn't that they just took a chance on a "bad practicer." It was said a light came on sometime before the Alabama game last year.

All that practicing caught up to Dobbs, and with injuries abound he got his second thrust into action. Dobbs still has reports of inconsistency. That doesn't mean he's a bad practicer. It means he still has work to do. You could see it in games last year. He's not "there," He hasn't "arrived." But he's a whole lot better.

Except for the times UT has had big leads and kept the starters in, even into the 4th quarter.......

There are a lot of posters that could get on board with this - check the Colton Jumper one on MLB competition yesterday.

All of those quotes refer to a young and inexperienced player. Not a player that practices poorly. That's the difference I see
