Hey Vols fans, I am heading to Pigeon Forge in a couple weeks for vacation. This is the second time I've been in Tennessee (went to Memphis for South Carolina's bowl game in December).

I was wondering if you all have any suggestions for things to see, restaurants, etc. in Pigeon Forge or the surrounding area.

Thanks so much and good luck with the upcoming football season!

I like Connors. It is in five oaks, and owned by the same guys that own the chop house. I suggest the shrimp and grits and the collard greens. Very good eatin.

I didn't realize Gatlinburg was that close. A few others told me that Pigeon Forge was bad, but I was hoping some Tenn folks would have kinder words, lol. Maybe I should be asking for what to do in Gatlinburg.

Personally, I'd change plans and go somewhere else. I guess you might enjoy it if you've never been to Pigeon Forge / Gatlinburg.

Be sure to treat yourself to an airbrushed tee shirt of a unicorn or something.

To be fair, it just depends on what you like. Some people love that area. It is tacky to say the least, though.

there is a row of places to stay on strip right in front of new aquarium in gatlinburg. I stayed in the bear "something" lodge, and it was nice.

Hike some trails, walk the "strip" in Gatlinburg at night, and eat at some good restaurants. My favs in Gatlinburg are The Best Italian, Calhouns, and either Pancake Pantry or Log Cabin Pancakes for breakfast.

Come to the Summit... I'll sell you some mountain property! :)

Wow. The All-American Buffet. That brings back some (bad) college memories. 3 friends and I actually had an "eat-off" there one time. You should have seen the pile of cottage cheese that sealed the deal for the winner.

Back to topic. . . .head to the mountains for some hiking and scenery, then toward K-town and maybe stop by Ye Olde Steak House on Chapman Highway for a Knoxville tradition. I have heard that the new coasters at Dollywood are OK, but it IS still Dollywood.

Pigeon Forge is an armpit. If you go, you'll spend the whole time eating fast food, staring at taillights as you sit in traffic, and shuffling through outlet stores browsing through cheap plastic crap. Gatlinburg is marginally better, but unfortunately it's the same kind of thing now. I can only recommend it as a jumping-off place if you plan to spend most of your time up in the Smokies.

It pains me to be so negative about a place right in the Smokies, which is basically God's very own country, but these days that whole place is wretched all the way from I-40 to the Open Hearth restaurant at the far end of Gatlinburg. It depresses me every time I have to drive through there to get to that end of the park.

I don't think that the open hearth is still there but I could be wrong. There are some fine rest. at the far end of Gatlinburg that are locally owned. A good quick trail to do is not far from there in the Smokies. It is the Chimneys trail. It shouldn't take you too long. I enjoyed Dollywood and it has come a long way from what it used to be in the 90s. There are tons of garbage stores in Pigeon-Burg. The usual outlet stores for Tommy, Nike, Sony...all the big name stuff. I highly suggest going over to Townsend and renting a tube. Start above the Y and float on down a little past, walk and do it again. It has been so dry the water might be down but still a good time. There are horseback tours in Wears Valley not far from Pigeon-Forge that are beautiful. If you like baseball, catch a Smokies game on the weekend. I think that saturday night games have a fireworks display after the end. Get drunk and go ride go-carts.
