I started following racing when I was about 12, in 1960. My father owned a NASCAR Sportsman car ( now Nationwide). I worked as a corner worker at Mid-Ohio and Nelson Ledges and Charlotte. I raced some as well. I've driven Bristol, Charlotte, Mid-Ohio, Waterford Hills, Pocono, and IRP. Promoted races at the Kingsport Raceway, worked for JD Stacey.

On that Alan Jones note, I think the Australians get the shaft any time any sort of list comes out. It takes a whole bunch of balls and talent to hustle around those tiny little tracks they have.

Very interesting that you have these two names without Phil Hill. As a matter of fact, I find it completely amazing that Phil hasn't even made the thread yet. Not only was he the first and only American-born F1 WDC, He has played a very integral part in American sportscar history, was a major player in the birth of the GT40.

This also seems to be the case in most American motorsport circles. I wonder if this was a consequence of his unwillingness to come back to America until he retired.

Actually, I put Phil Hill down twice, but left him off, but you are right. America's first and only American born F1 Champ, was also at home in sports cars and saloon cars
as they are called in GB. A class act all the way, fairly recently departed, he was respected world wide.

Your reference to the GT-40 brings to mind the name of Ritchie Ginther.

I also should have had George Follmer on my list.

I have a good Waad Burrtun story. Back when they had the innaugural Homestead Florida
Busch race,I was a retail store manager at the time down there. He came in the store
and I helped him try and fit into some Nike shoes but his foot was too small. He was
a really nice guy though.
