Kyle Phillips would have been the crown jewel of many recruiting classes.

He was ranked by one recruiting service as the top prospect in Tennessee.

But the former Hillsboro star flew slightly under the radar, as absurd as it sounds, as part of a Vols defensive line class that also includes Kahlil McKenzie, one of the nation's top freshmen, and Shy Tuttle.

Now that everyone is on campus and in pads, though, Phillips isn't getting lost in the shuffle anymore.

During the Army All American game, he wreaked havoc. I hadn't seen many of his highlights before that game, but he was obviously the best defensive player when he was on the field. Made the offenses look slow.

if butch will let us we will have at least 3 shutouts this year. our defense is bad azz

Doubtful althought the D will be good and probably better than last year. To shutout an opponent you also have to have solid special teams and no bone head pick 6 plays on offense. I could see us shutting down Vandy but I doubt we can blank 3 on our schedule this year.

General Neyland coached a whole season without one point being scored on the entire team O,D,or special teams of course that was a much different time in football. The only team to ever do that. Although they did get scored on in their bowl game. I believe the bowl game was against southern Cal.

Its so nice to have some quality depth to look forward to. Now if we can just make it thru camp without any more serious injuries

I think only McKenzie was more highly touted, no?

Depending on the source we had FIVE 5-star recruits last year. Kahlil McKenzie, Drew Richmond, Alvin Kamara, Preston Williams, and Kyle Phillips. Shy Tuttle was also considered a 5-star for most of the recruiting cycle last year so you could count him as a 6th five-star.

Rivals had both Kahlil and Drew ranked above Kyle. Scout has Kahlil and Preston ranked above Kyle. ESPN had Kahlil, Shy, Drew, and Preston ranked above Kyle. And I believe 24/7 is the only one that had Kyle ranked behind only Kahlil. All in all, there were other guys more highly rated depending on the recruiting service you looked at.

I would say Kahlil was clearly our #1 rated recruit. After that you could go with any of the other 5 stars.

I swear he was in on every play in that game. Smith at LB a 3 star will be one to watch also. Butcher after a year in the program will be in the mix. The list goes on. It will be hard to top this recruiting class from a defense standpoint. Some will take a year or so, but the talent and depth they will provide over the next 3-4 years will be the foundation for this program. Then just keep adding qaulity depth. OMG it's finally happening.

Thanks for posting this here. I've never understood why people always post info on the newcomers in their recruiting forum threads after they're already on campus. Pet peeve, I guess.

After the show he put on at that game, hard to believe he has been overshadowed. But he really has. He was a beast in that game. I hope he has used being overlooked as motivation because all the media seems to be focused on is Shy/Kmac. We may have all 3 on the all- Freshman team.

Question: We know Barnett is a stud. Say he is a 1st round pick after is JR year. Phillips develops into a stud and projects a 1st round pick. Do elite DE's take notice and we start pulling the best DE's in the country. These two may open up a pipe line of DE's to come here. Finally feels good to be back to the "old" dominating D lines!!

Hypothetically if this all comes to fruition as you state.. yes... most of the nations TOP DE will take notice and come to UT.

that's a hypothetical fact! :rock2:
