The favorite new gathering place for visiting rival fans. Seriously, what a pesky little reminder that will always be thrown in the face of Vol fans for decades: you named the street outside the stadium after the guy, then fired him 10 years later.

I know the street won't be renamed, but maybe it will serve as a continual reminder to move with caution when making permanent remembrances. Sheesh. :fool:

Are you frickin' serious? The guy's a UT legend, same as the rest of them that have streets named after them.

Give me a break.

I hope it remains there proudly forever.

Yea, in 17 years all he could muster was a measly National Title. I'd say we should deny ever employing the sorry thing.

University officials likely did push the Knoxville government to change the name back in '99, but that was a move by Victor Ashe. He changed several while he was mayor.

They should rename that street, along with Tee Martin's and Manning's.

True or False - The guy was canned for not getting the job done? No spin, no looking back at the legend, just yes or no?

Cry me a river, but the facts don't change. At best, the street name will be a painful reminder of good times gone bad.

in 20 years no one will look at it like you are suggesting. I will be telling my kids that he was the coach when I was in college, coached some of the greatest UT players to come thru this school and won the first NC for UT since 1951 in 1998.

The firing is too fresh in many people's minds to look at it objectively.

I have been one of his biggest detractors on this board but the man had a good career at this University.

Johnny got a street named after him. You don't see anyone changing it or complaining there do you?

The most ironic sign is up on this street since they will be doing construction to Neyland.

NOTICE:

to be closed for
construction beginning

i think all sewage treatment plants in TN should be named Dave Clawson, in stead of taking a dump, we all know take a clawson

I heard there was talk of turning it into a one-way street.

No need. They should keep it as is because:

1. The man won us our first title since '51 and took the program to the next level; making us nationally relevant - otherwise, we are UGA. If you don't believe me, just look at the ESPN coverage over the last month.

2. Either way you drive it, Phillip Fulmer Way goes uphill, curves a bit, and then goes steadily downhill. It is the perfect metaphor for his tenure.

Using your logic, we should be ashamed that our stadium is named "Neyland." Get real man. Just because it was time for a ledgend to leave does not mean the ledgend needs to be dis-owned.
