I fear we're on the verge of a panic hire even worse than Derek Dooley.

So let's ask CPF to take over for next season so we can take our time and see who's available next year.

What's the worst that could happen under a temporary Fulmer regime? An 8 loss season?

First, it was guys like Cut and Brooks who made UT so good back in the day. Honestly, it's too bad cut is happy where he is. I think he'd be a good hire and a guy who would steady the ship for the next 5 years+.

Second, who's available? If a coach is worth a damn, he's got a job right now and will have one next year. I'm not a fan of taking guys fired by other programs. They're fired for a reason IMO. Pool of guys who may be willing to move to Knoxville will be the same next year. Get this over and done already. Imagine trying to salvage this class when they know their coach next year is likely one and done plus the next class will have no clue who they'll be playing for after next season. End this and make a hire this year. No need to rush for the early signing period anymore. This class is toast. Just get the right man for the job.

You said it yourself... back in the day.

Hell, if you are going to dig up old coaches with Tennessee ties, go get Spurrier...

You missed the point. My response was to the suggestion we get Fulmer as interim for a year. Guys like Cut and Brooks made Fulmer. Having him for a year while we wait until next year is silly. Get Haslam out of our business, name Fulmer the AD but make a hire this year but take your time and get the right man for this job. Right now I'm really feeling Kiffin is the safest bet. We know he can coach. We know he can handle the media. We know he's capable of handling the big stage and SEC. We know he knows Bama, UGA, etc.

Hire Cutcliffe. He develops your players. Recruits okay. Retires in 3 years after a 9 win season. TN is seen as a great job.

If anyone could get Peyton on staff it is him.

If you want a stop gap solution. It's Cutcliffe not Fulmer.

We did the right thing by protesting the hire but now the football community is mad at us and will black ball any coach that comes here, so our choices will be very limited. Thanks Haslam and Currie

Count me in.

He should have been eased out like Bowden, not fired like Mack Brown.

The differences in how FSU has recovered from losing Bowden and our experience are tremendous.

Having Fulmer as interim for a year...we could do a lot worse.

He might be able to bring Tee in as HC in waiting, or even JB Cooter.

Coach Fulmer said:

“As we look forward, we need a great coach, we need a great leader, we need a great example for our young people,” Fulmer said. “That’s how you do it here. I know it’s how you do it here, it’s probably how you do it and have success at most places.”

Such a shame he was kicked to the curb 10 years ago, leading to all this mess.

We should welcome Fulmer back and treat him with the respect he should have always been given.

Wonderful sentiment. Horrible idea.

This would result in the same effect as the NCAA Death Penalty. The 2018 class would rank DEAD LAST. Current player transfers would resemble a fire sale.

“Hi, I’m Interim Coach Phil Fulmer and I want you to commit to Tennessee to play footballl. I know they fired me 9 years ago, and I’m only the interim coach now, but I promise we will find a coach you will like for your final 3 seasons.”

After that, no decent coach would want to tackle that kind of rebuild. Success happens by year 3, if not, you’re on the hot seat, or should be.

Here is how we fix this mess:
1. Bring Fulmer back as AD. he brings ethics, Vol tradition back to the football and all the other sports. he knows the fan base and the politics of the University.
2. Hire Kiffin on 3 year contract. He can recruit and rebuild the talent. Fulmer can keep his ass out of trouble.
3. Bring back Chavis as DC. He is also one hell of a recruiter, and looking for a job right now.
4. Start a search immediately to replace Kiffin.
5. Start search for Fulmer successor and get him in place for the time when Phil is ready to retire.

This will get football back up and winning as quickly as possible and retun ethics to the program.

I really believe people who want fulmer or even worse chavis must be too young to remember how awful they were in the final years of their tenure here. Heck both Lsu and tx am wanted him gone in a year or so after he was hired. He helped get Sumlin fired and probably led to miles loosing his job. His failure followed him everywhere.

I say let CPF be the interim for 2 years with Tee Martin as OC/coach-in-waiting. Then hire Charlie Strong as the DC.
