Curious to find out your opinions on a matter........

Who is responsible for all the softy defensvie zones, DB'ing hanging 10 yards off receivers, and lame prevent defenses that we always play when we're:

1. on third down
2. ahead
3. destroying the other team
4. about to win
5. scared
6. dumb

I wonder, whose idea is it?? Fulmer's, Chavis', or Slade's.........Thinking it's one of the first 2........what do u think??

Fulmer. He's the head coach. He had plenty of opportunity of finding another DC through the years and didn't. It's Fulmer's fault. Period.

Wife calling for Saners head. I was calling for Chiefs for years

Buck stops with chavis on that. I would say that our corners aren't particularly good, but its happened for too many years for it to be the kids fault everytime.

Chavis says "I don't call soft defenses"

Which implies he is overruled by Phil.
No he isn't. He has a were going to get beat deep complex. I'd say john is one coach phil didn't mess with to much. Probably the reason he has been our best coach besides cutcliffe as long as he has been here.

True but Phil as the head coach could have shot all these calls down or made a change at DC over the years could he have not? I mean he WAS the HC.

"I don't think we play soft. There were times in the Georgia game that our corners did line a little deeper than we wanted them to," Chavis said.
Tennessee defense short on Third Down - from CBS42.com

So either Chavis is clueless as to what soft coverage is, his players are clueless, he is being overruled, or all of the above.
Its a scheme he runs. Other teams run it also. Just their players tackle the receiver before he gets to the yard marker. It goes back to fundamentals, something tennessee under phil's watch has rarely been good at.

the fact of the matter is our defense has played pretty good all year except the florida game, if we could have scored 21 points a game this year, we would have had a winning season and a bowl game (which isnt good enough), but it would be much better than this.

I agree they've lived on the field. But they're horrible on third down, some of the blame has to rest at their feet for not getting teams stopped.

If Fulmer didn't agree with the "soft" defenses, he should have had the nuts to make Chavis change it up or bring in a DC whose style he agreed with. He did not. He got fired. Let's move on. Get over Fulmer. I appreciate and respect CPF for what he did here but he simply was not getting the job done.

It's kind of funny. When have you ever seen a defense that was top 10 in total defense in the country, but one of the WORST at 3rd down percentages, in the country??
Makes no sense, it has to be a scheme issue. It's hard to blame the DB's entirely, bc/ they are one of the top interception teams in the country.

After games, Fulmer acts shocked that our defensive backs play so far off of wide receivers. Get a clue, Fulmer. You're the freaking head coach. If you want something changed, all you have to do is quit your clapping and open your trap and say so!

With Fulmer so utterly clueless about the whole situation, there is ZERO doubt that it is Chavis' inept defensive playcalling that is causing the situation.

However, EVERYTHING that has to do with the football team is ultimately the head coach's responsibility, and this is no different.

I'll solve the mystery for you. The ONLY reason that our defense is ranked so highly is that our offense has consistently given our opponents a short field with which to work. As a result, our opponents don't have the opportunity to rack up as many yards as they otherwise would have done. Our defense is bad, as evidenced by the atrocious 3rd down conversion stats.

Agree somewhat....however, I don't think our defense is bad overall, unless it's 3rd down and 12!! then we SUCK!!! haha...

rarely been good at?? are you serious?? its hard not to be good at this when they've won 150 games under fulmer's watch

I'm sure there's a correlation here in the most recent years...

2005
Avg Offense faced - 61
Defense ranking - 7
Offense ranking - 90

2006
Avg Offense faced - 43
Defense ranking - 50
Offense ranking - 36

2007
Avg Offense faced - 57
Defense ranking - 70
Offense ranking - 54

2008
Avg Offense faced - 76
Defense ranking - 8
Offense ranking - 116

Fundamentally sound on fulmer's watch. Yep, it hasn't been often. Two sec championships in 17 years. Phil rode the talent until everyone else's talent got better.

does anyone really believe that Phil couldn't have fixed this problem had he viewed it as a problem?
