With doubts in Raleigh's coaching ability. Thoughts of a new coach come up.. Phil garner is a tennessee guy, wonder if mike hamilton would ever pursue him?

I'm sure he would contact him.

He probably wouldn't be that good of a fit, though.

Career big league guy.

Recruiting and patience with college kids would be a big adjustment.

He's a solid guy and a helluva coach. Just not sure he'd be a good fit here.

I see what your saying about a big league guy.. But i was thinking about a guy with some experience with big time games.. Apparently raleigh has none.. Wanting to get someone that was used to winning and was used to being around Tennessee tradition

Also Mike Hamilton tends to try and be hands on with his coaches and how they run the program.

That would be a recipe for disaster with Garner.

True. Garner actually has a very good record as an MLB manager, taking into consideration where he has managed. He will almost certainly be offered another managerial job before long. No reason for him to want to go to the college ranks.

First time poster to this board but long time reader and former player. Phil Garner even though very respected wouldn't be the right fit. I think we are Tennessee and need to look outside the box and go for former assistant coach Dave Serrano at Cal Fullerton. Very respected in the coaching ranks, would bring instant credibility and has done nothing but win after he left Tennessee. Just not sure if he would leave to come back to Rocky Top.

I cringe whenever I hear people say "Hire Phil Garner" or "Hire Peyton Manning"

Phil Garner is not coaching at UT. Not going to happen. The money is too little, the aggravation is too high and it would kill any chance for him to go back on the MLB coaching carousel.

We tried he Pro coach before Mark Conner and that was a disaster.

Let's not say the name again...It can never happen.

Well its not like he is doing anything right now.. You would think if he wanted to get back in the MLB then he would be active in a Major league organization

Phil Garner won't do it, staying in the pro game.

However, asking Garner to help with the coaching search would be a really good idea....

Another deal. Baseball is a far different animal than football or basketball where coaches move frequently between levels.

Very few modern college coaches become pro managers and visa versa.

College baseball is a huge headache to coach. Low budgets, few scholarships, amateur draft including high schools. Recruiting. TERRIBLE baseball parents from suburban hell.

I believe major league manager is far easier than college head coach and it pays much more.

Also, Phil Garner has never been all that close to this program since leaving to play pro ball. Now that may be personality conflicts with AD or coach or it may be scheduling but Phil Garner (despite playing at UT) has never been a real UT rah-rah guy. He likely made enough money to wait it out for the next bench coach or manager position. And he WILL get another offer and hopefully at a large market team

The only guy I can think of who moved between college and pros was Dick Howser and he only coached at Florida State for one season I believe.

I have a stupid name and one I will most likely get flamed for bringing up, but his name got thrown around a little when the pitching coach searches have been going on. I know it's stupid to throw another MLB coach out there, but Rick Honeycutt is a name I've kinda wondered about. I know the chances are below zero, but I think he would be a pretty good hire if by some freak chance he were interested. He's currently the Pitching coach for the LA Dodgers and being a UT guy and from Chattannoga, I was always kind of a fan of the guy. I know he's a name that wouldn't even consider us, but I think it'd be a pretty cool hire to see.

Junkyard is an MLB guy all the way. I'd say we'll go the college route no matter what because as has been said, guys in baseball don't seem to go from pros to college and vice versa. At this point, as long as Raleigh is gone at the end of the season don't know that I care what names are rumored to replace him as long as someone does.

Best I remember, Serrano would not give Hamilton the time of day during the last coaching search.

Through second hand information I've heard that Serrano is keeping an eye on this situation. I believe UT job was all about timing for him. Now if true this would be something to root for.
