Peyton Manning on Crompton
Former UT great and NFL MVP Peyton Manning spent part of Monday working out with UT's players and meeting with coaches (more on that later).

Manning said he's still forming a relationship with UT coach Lane Kiffin, but he likes the new staff's energy and work ethic. He's also a big Monte Kiffin fan, spending a lot of time with UT's new defensive coordinator during his last visit to Knoxville in the spring talking NFL defenses.

Manning also talked a little bit about Jonathan Crompton, who enters his final season with the Vols after struggling last season. Manning quipped that he's only had to learn three offenses - one in high school, one in college and one in the NFL - and that the offensive turnover hasn't helped Crompton.

Here's what Manning had to say about Crompton:

"Very talented player. He's got a very live arm, which is important. But obviously the mental side of it is important as well. I think that's where he's continuing to learn and grow. There's no question - not that it's an excuse - this will be his third system in three years, which is a challenge. That's not easy for a young player. In fairness to him, that has been a challenge. I think for him, he just needs to learn as much as he possibly can about this system. I think the key is getting as comfortable as he possibly can with the receivers. You want to know exactly where each receiver's going to be so you're not having to look for them and hope they're there. You trust that they will be there. That comes through time and through experience.

"I'm pulling hard for him. I want him to have a great year. It's special being a quarterback at this school and this conference. I hope he has a good year. I hope the receivers and running backs surrounding him really help him out."

Before working out with the Vols on Monday afternoon - apparently he'll be around on Tuesday as well - Manning spent a few minutes with the media after awarding the scholarship he endows to recent Maryville High School graduate Hunter Tipton.

I could be wrong, but it sounds like he is trying to be nice, and is saying Crompton has a strong arm but isn't very smart.
