With the Andrew Luck announcement today, that made me wonder what the atmosphere was like around the time Manning's big decision came. How intense was the reaction from both Tennessee and Jets fans? What were people expecting him to do? What kind of record were people expecting if he left? (13-0, right?)

I was a sophmore in the fraternity house at the time and we were all huddled around the TV between classes waiting on his presser. There were loud noises and hugging involved!

I work for the University of Washington, last year when Jake Locker passed on the draft (and likely a top 3 pick) people were losing their minds thinking that it all of the sudden meant they were gonna win the Pac-10.

I was a junior at Farragut and we actually stopped class and turned on the TV to watch the press conference....I remember the entire hallway errupting with cheers when he said he was staying!

You gotta remember as a fan base that we had our hearts broken just 3 years earlier in somewhat the same type scenario with Shulers announcement which made what Manning did even bigger and better.

My junior year of college, I actually left class about 5 minutes before his announcement, walked out to my car to listen on the radio. Listened about 10 minutes and returned to class. The whole state was abuzz for weeks afterward.

It was huge. Pre-fan board internet days so we were listening to the radio, it was during my college internship.

Elation for all Vol fans... except those biased towards Tee Martin, lol.

Essentially when he said that he was staying it was national championship or bust... very exciting time.

There was an uproar on campus loud enough to wake me up in my dorm room. I recall that pretty distinctly. 'Twas pretty cool.

So that makes you FHS class of 98 and us classmates. I was in the commons when I heard (can't remember if we watched it live or just heard through the grapevine) either way the excitement was electric.

:loco: I thought they should have just given him the heisman then. But we had to wait and see it stolen from him. Heisman means nothing to me.

A popularity contest amongst elitist idiots. When Manning announced, he became my favorite Vol ever! Total surprise too. I was 15, remembered Schuler well, and was sure he was gone.

It is like the Nobel Peace Prize that usually goes to terrorists (Arafat), shysters (Al Gore) and incompetents (Jimmy Carter). I know I am a UT homer, but Woodson over Peyton was really a PC joke. I remember that gasbag Beano spouting off about Woodson's greatness and that Peyton had never beaten Florida. I don't believe Michigan was undefeated all during Woodson's career either, but I guess that doesn't matter because he played in the Big 10.
