Not much news out of Knoxville, but what is coming is big:

Just as the ancient Greeks turned to the Oracle at Delphi for answers, Volunteer fans turn to Peyton Manning. Just as Muslims turn toward Mecca daily, Vol fans bow toward Indianapolis.

Just as… you get the point, Tennessee fans worship Manning and many want HIM to be the Vols’ next coach (even though he has less experience than their inexperienced new guy).

So it’s not good news for Lane Kiffin that Manning isn’t ready to embrace the new coach just yet.

Despite what ESPN reported, Manning now says he was never consulted about the hire and learned of it from media reports. Of course, according to a pretty solid source I have, Mike Hamilton actually tried to go through Manning’s papa, Archie, to reach Peyton… because Peyton wasn’t returning calls to UT’s athletic director.

Now he says he was talking on the phone to Phillip Fulmer during the last few weeks and that he would have liked to have been consulted by Tennessee on the new hire.

“It was kind of a one-man crew on the athletic department side. It was their decision, so I found out when everybody else found out.” He also said, “Obviously, it’s a big change there, so we’ll see how it works out. I wish him the best, obviously. My blood still bleeds orange.”

Former players for Phillip Fulmer aren’t buying in and might not ever, but the current players seem to be saying all the right things.

Either 1) they like loosing
2) Phillip Fulmer is a great and likeable guy
3)They know their @sses are about to get reamed from workouts.

Peyton is just loyal to Fulmer like nearly all of the former players. It will take him some time to get used to the idea of Fulmer being gone. I like Peyton too, but I would much rather see the Vols winning SEC titles than have Peyton's blessing on our coaching matters. Ideally we'll have both... it might take him a while to come around.

Who cares if Peyton Manning endorses it or not? I love the guy more than anyone, but it's not his decision.

I like the guy. I think he's great . . . but I'm having trouble caring whether Peyton Manning's feelings are hurt.

No offense to Peyton, but I don't know what his opinion has to do with it?

I dont see where this proves Peyton didnt give his "blessing" and on a second note, I could care less if he "blessed" the Kiffen hire. He sounded pretty firm on his stance to continue to support his alma mater though.

"blessing" - hahahaha.

Crybaby Fulmer created all of this divisiveness by not recognizing his own shortcomings and the will of the majority of the fans by retiring gracefully.

Someone please explain to me "why" Peyton Manning should have been consulted.
I didnt realize that the Peyton had been running UT athletics while being an NFL QB at the same time. Amazing. In fact, what makes him even "in" on this decision at all? the fact that he donates money?
Politics and emptional ties a good program does not make.

I was a Kiffinite when I heard that Peyton was endorsing him...but now, knowing Peyton's uncertain about him, I can't support this dude.

I'm joining the NegaLanes....only Reggie White's approval will change my mind now.

The mindless drones that all became Colts fans in 98 and wanted Eli Manning to win a Super Bowl last year just because he is a Manning.

 i'm also having a hard time in finding falut with Hamilton not seeking Peyton's advice on who he should hire as the next coach.

now, i read similar article, and i'm not sure that Manning expected to be consulted, as much as he was answering a quetion about whether he was consulted or not.......

there may be some taking it out of context here......but i digress.

I was just about to make the same point. I really don't see any comments from him indicating that he is even slightly whining about not getting a phone call.

No one makes me bleed my own blood.

If Peyton was really not returning MH's calls, then how the hell was he supposed to get Peyton's input on the coaching situation? Not like he should have felt then need to call Peyton in the first place. This is so far beyond a non-story.

Peyton is not only a former player, he is a big time booster with the potential to contribute mega bucks to the program. To me that is justification for a consultation.

Further down in the article quoted in the OP it says...

"Asked if he would have liked to be consulted on the hiring, Manning said yes - if he wasn't playing. At the time he was busy studying upcoming opponents."

Much ado about little I think...
