A Tennessee Volunteers legend is doing what he can to help the school find a new head football coach.

According to college football insider Brett McMurphy, Peyton Manning tried to sell Oklahoma State Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy on coming to Knoxville to replace Butch Jones.

Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman reported earlier Tuesday that Tennessee had Gundy on its list of top coaching candidates. The school also reached out to Purdue Boilermakers head coach Jeff Brohm and NC State Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren.

Trying to make up for signing off on Schiano. I’ll forgive him if it works.

Yeah, but Peyton is also leading the charge against Tee Martin getting the offer apparently. Even with Tee saying he would accept job immediately if offered.

I’m all in on Gundy.

And also, Peyton can ditch me at the prom and kick my dog but as long as he brings me flowers at the end of the day he will always be Peyton.

And I don’t like flowers.

Report: Former Tennessee QB Peyton Manning called Mike Gundy to pitch Vols job

According to national college football reporter Brett McMurphy, Peyton Manning called Gundy to make a pitch to the Oklahoma State coach to take the Tennessee job. The Vols have an opening after firing Butch Jones earlier this month.

Manning is involved so my guess is Gundy will be the guy.

Kiffin is my first choice but I won't get Gundy out of bed. Sweetest El Camino headrest in sports

I can see people calling him Eugene from TWD if he ever loses to them.

I would like Gundy. Would be a good step above Butch. Has the potential to be elite if he can find a DC.

My fear is that we are going thru all these steps to be turned down again.....publicly. This will give the national media douche bags more ammunition to feed into their narrative that we are a joke.

All hearsay. Manning would never do that. but if he did, is he wrong? Tee has only been an OC for two years. Before that he was a WR coach at USC and Kentucky in a 5 year span. Before that a High School HC in Georgia. I love Tee but he ain't ready for this job...yet.

Manning being involved changes nothing. Manning was most likely consulted on Schiano, and he signed off. Same with Fulmer, same with a number of influential Vols.

If Gundy leaves, it is over the fact the he feels under appreciated where he is. Ok. State held out to the last minute in his most recent contract extension.
