Pete Rose details being offered to play football at Tennessee

Pete Rose would run through fire for his team. He never bet against the Reds. He was recently a guest on CNBC and was asked a political question - which he deferred to answer because he was an athlete and not a politician.

I'm not sure we shouldn't offer him a scholarship now if he has eligibility left :)

I do remember the Knoxville team was a Detroit Tigers farm team, my dad was always a Tiger fan. Mickey Lolich, Norm Cash, Mickey Stanley, Willie Horton, Gates Brown, Denny McClain......some ex Smokies. Tigers beat a St Louis team with a dominant pitcher (Bob Gibson) in 1968 World Series, Lolich carried the pitching, (McLain had won 30 games), never thought they would beat Gibson. Gibson was the man who caused the baseball mound change....a bad man

How do you know? Because he said so? Given he lied about his activities for years before finally coming clean, I'd say chances are pretty good he actually did.

He was a great player but it's pretty clear he's a slimy human being.

All the paperwork kept by the bookies, which constituted the bulk of the evidence, indicated he bet a lot, but never against his team. He was just too competitive to leave it alone. Your point is valid about the lying, but he's still the type of teammate I'd like to have.

Slimy, who knows. I have never met the man. One thing that is for certain is that he's one of the greatest baseball players to ever set foot on a field. Funny thing to me is that if it had been a drug addiction instead of gambling he would have been forgiven long ago.

Had he actually bet against the Reds? I am pretty sure whoever investigated it would have come out and provided evidence that he actually did. After all these years and him continuing to assert that? It would have come out by now.

I remember listening to that game and that World Series on a radio. I was working in the Grundy County High cafeteria my sophomore year and the radio was on. I'm not even a baseball fan but found that series exciting.

I have. He was OK by me. But that doesn't absolves him for what he did. I think there is a snowballs chance in Hell he might be in the HOF one day. If it does, he will probably be in the grave.

Agree - Pete makes the HOF posthumously.

I have friends here in SW Indiana that are life-long Reds fans and by all accounts Pete has done a ton of charity work and makes several appearance each year on behalf of different charities and organizations. Most that know or meet the guy say he is a 'stand-up' guy.

Understand the reason Pete is still banned is because he's been betting MLB games ever since

Why not? If he is doing it in states where it is legal? I don't care. Guarantee you there are plenty of ex- players in the HOF who have betted on games, but are or were smart enough not to advertise it. However, they were not playing or managing at the time. Once you are retired, and not officially working for the club? Nobody cares, except for people who want to create a headline.

He's lost the privilege to bet on baseball games. That's not reconfiguring your life. Furthermore he'd likely try to get back into coaching or managing. You can't have that. Is it too much to ask to have him cut the MLB gambling?

Actually, you read that wrong. I said snowball's chance in Hell. As to his chances of making the HOF? Posthumously is part of it. Odds are long he ever makes it. But if he does? Include McGuire, Sosa, the Black Sox, and a few others in the door opening for them as well. It will also be posthumously of most of the people currently handling the selections right now.

Oh, BS! If there is somebody willing to place bets for him? He has the privilege the same as you or I do. I am to the point in life that what people do with money they earn? I don't give a damn if they gamble. As long as they aren't giving me crap over what I do with my money. That is my effing business.

So you want MLB to revoke their rule on gambling?

No. They are gonna do what they are gonna do. And what I want or don't want doesn't make a hill of beans. Quit breathing acetone. It causes you to read into simple statements crap that isn't there.

I think Knoxville would have made a great farm team for the Atlanta Braves.

Don't know, maybe he did better at concealing that he did bet against them. He also asserted for years he didn't bet on baseball games then asserted he never bet on the Reds before he admitted he did. It's not like Rose has a ton of credibility in this area.

Because a drug addiction doesn't get into the ethics of the "integrity of the game"....unless those drugs are steroids. You may laugh at the reasoning but that's why he hasn't been forgiven; he committed one of the worst things he could do in the eyes of MLB.

Well, I was watching him play with Bench, and Concepcion, Morgan and those guys. I remember him turning second and diving face first into third. That sticks more for me than whining about his credibility. He screwed up, no doubt about that. And for that, I will neither praise nor condemn him for it. All I know is when I visited Cooperstown in 95, and saw the plaques of those inducted, I wished I could have seen one for him. Despite the mistakes, I feel as a player he deserves to be up there. And it is a shame he ain't.

Is the HOF a rehab facility now? I just don't see how it is any of their business or why that should factor into the decision at all. But that's jmo
