This year our program has been on a downward spiral to mediocrity. Some people jump on the flavor of the month coach and envision greatness for our team.
Some people feel that you hire a legend and greatness will follow. Ask Notre Dame how Charlie Weiss the highly touted NFL OC is working out for them. Pete Carroll has succeeded at USC but not in the NFL and the same could be said for Spurrier when we he went to the NFL.
Finding the right coach is a reality we must face and the man we hire must have a hunger to reach the top, doing things the right way (no NCAA trauma) and loyality to our program. I would rather have a coach of character of the before mentioned attributes then a flash in the pan coach who will only use us until the next highest bidder comes a courting.
The reality is there is no magic formula that gives credence to hiring a current HC vs a coordinator. Make a list of the top coaches you feel are what we need and then examine the traits they all share.
Winners on the field or in life all share dedication to their craft, a desire to achieve greatness and respect from their peers. That is why Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer, Kyle Whittingham and Pete Carroll are successful.
