Is giving a masterclass in how not to run a coaching search. It’s pretty clear they had no plan after firing Franklin. I guess they just assumed people would be lining up and begging for the job. They’re at the point where they may be forced to remove the interim tag from Terry Smith and give him the job on a full time basis.

I thought they were planning to hire Sitake (sp?) from BYU.

Were the Cougs able to find some way to give him enough to stay?

Last I heard, they were supposed to announce after the B12 championship Saturday

I don't get what's going on with Penn State. They were the first to fire their coach in James Franklin. Now he's at Virginia Tech. All these other schools are filling their vacancies while the Nittany Lions keep getting turned down. Who the hell is running that coaching search up in Happy Valley is what I am wondering.

All true .... and they fired James Franklin way back on October 13th. Even if they didn't have a plan at the time of his firing, they've had enough time to come up with one.

The only two coaches that I can find information on them reaching out to are Indiana's Curt Cignetti (who was a long shot), and BYU's Kalani Sitake.

.... and they need to hurry. James Franklin is poaching their commitment list like a runaway bandit. Franklin flipped 2 Penn State commitments over to Virginia Tech today.

There's a legitimate chance that Penn State ends tomorrow with zero recruits in their 2026 class, which is astonishing.

2020 and 2021 were bad years, but stretching back to 2016 there are only three seasons that Penn State would have assuredly been out of contention for the current twelve team playoff format. No one wants to lose to UCLA and Northwestern, sure, but I cannot fathom firing a coach who took you to last year's semifinal for an isolated three game skid if you don't have a solid backup plan in place.

I definitely think they fired him prematurely. Based on the results of last season, I would have given him at least another year to turn it around.

Maybe potential candidate coaches don’t want to coach for a program that will fire at the drop of a hat after one bad loss.

Penn State is a classic example of a team thinking "We're Penn State so we can just go get a good coach."

There's some folks like that on VN who seem to think "We're UT so we'll have no problem getting a coach if we get rid of Heupel."

It's just not necessarily the case even when the job is like BYU vs Penn State. Penn State is obviously a step up but that doesn't mean you'll just waltz in and grab their coach.

Yea, the top tier coaches don't really direct swap jobs often. There's an occasional outlier like Lincoln Riley leaving OU for USC or Kelly leaving ND for LSU, but for the most part you're looking at either a small school head coach or a coordinator when you replace your HC..

Exactly. All you have to do is look at Penn State, Florida, Auburn, and Arkansas. I would include Ole Miss but they didn’t even try to go outside. It’s a different world these days when you are trying to entice high level coaches away from a comfortable situation. Kiffin is a different animal. I don’t think he’d be satisfied anywhere. The wanderlust is strong in him.

Wasn't really a matter of what PSU wanted man.

At least from the Nitwit Lion fans I know-boowter and fan support for Franklin had cratered. Bthey got tired of losing every game whenever they played someone with an actual pulse. My understanding is that the powers that be wanted to keep him but the situation was untenable

They were always an 8-4 or 9-3 type team propped up by a joke schedule in the SEC, they would have struggled to even get to a bowl some of those years

Not like they didn't have the talent either They have always recruited well.

They need to hire a package deal... new AD and head coach. Know of any?
And I'm not talking our present two, might recommend Phil & Jeremy as they are more of a BIG fit
