Now I am on the fence about getting rid of Fulmer!

Look at Penn State

W L
2007 9 4
2006 9 4
2005 11 1
---------------
2004.... 4 7
2003.... 3 9
2002.... 9 4
2001.... 5 6
2000.... 5 7

And where are they now? 2008

If they got rid of their coach they could have nosed dived like Neb and Bama was in the tank for years!

Now look at UT same time frame

2007 10- 4
2006 9 -4
2005 5 -6
2004 10 -3
2003 10- 3
2002 8 -5
2001 11 -2
2000 8 -4

Now I am not saying this is a major reason to keep Fulmer.

Just thinking because I am on the fence

. . .I said this same thing (without the substantiating stats!) about 3 months ago! :)

Penn St. is getting recruits based on the tradition and location in the Big 10 with them and other schools in that conference. Also, the Big 10 is weaker than the SEC at this point and will continue to play second or maybe 3rd fiddle with the emergence of the Big 12 as a powerhouse the past 2 years to rival the SEC. Penn St. wouldn't have gotten the resurgence they have enjoyed right now in the SEC. We are 30-20 in Phil's last 50 games and are 1-5 over the past 2 seasons against our rivals and we haven't beaten Florida in 4 years. You pointing out records is fine and all, just remember what conference we are in before comparing apples to oranges with UT and Penn St. It's much harder to recruit and play in this conference than it is in the Big 10.

I have always been a fan of the SEC and UT in particular. I went to PSU (class of '73) and know first hand all about the Nittany Lions! While I certainly would agree that the SEC is the toughest conference in the country, don't knock the Big Ten! In head to head matchups with the SEC in the last 5 years prior to the 3 Bowl Games that were Big Ten vs. SEC last year, the Big Ten led 8 victories to 7! With last years Vol win over Wisconsin and LSU's win over OSU, and UF's win over Michigan, the record is an even 9-9! So. . .while the SEC is better, how much better is definitely up for debate! In my view, PSU is greatly improved this year and I'll bet you they play the hated Crimson Tide for the National Championship! Any takers??? :dance2:

Pa. state has been mostly mediocre for 15 years--check their record from the 90s, too. And, yes, mediocre in a big ten conference that's MUCH weaker than the SEC. It was a two team conference (michigan and osu) for a long time--and now it's mostly a one-team conference, osu. I am not impressed at all by the pa. state example. And I also view Paterno as extremely selfish and a little weird. Coaches are not bigger than programs.

Penn St. plays in a high school conference, not the SEC.

Much easier to be competitive week in, week out.

Plus the fact that a comparison between fulmer and joepa is substantially ridiculous on several different levels. Fulmer == Lloyd Carr. He's done. Next.

Again. . .I'm a big SEC fan but your analysis of the Big 10 is pure B.S. :eek:lol:

If you compare the top 8 schools in the Big Ten and compare them to the top 8 schools in the SEC, (4 from the west and 4 the east), here are the records:

SEC - 44 Wins 18 Losses

Big 10 - 49 Wins 18 Losses

High School Conference?????????? :shaking2:

Paterno is not afraid to let the coaches do their jobs and puts his trust in them. If Fulmer hired personnel that helped his weaknesses we would not be having a discussion on why he should leave. He is afraid that if he gets a young smart coach in there then he might be the next Johnny Majors. (Which is selfish thinking on his part)

Fulmer's last hire was that of a "young, smart coach." It has hastened his downfall, not avoided or delayed it.

You can't look at Fulmer's win percentage and take it for face value. That big win percentage comes at the expense of hapless opponents (Ole Miss, Miss St., Kentucky, Vandy, creampuffs for homecoming, etc., etc.

What's his losing percentage now since 2001 against Bama, Auburn, LSU, Fla, Georgia, SECCG and bowl games - nearing 70%? Phil has turned into a loser.

It is a stupid assertion to think because Fulmer might not be good for the future that he wasn't any good in the past. The man presided over the greatest era of UT football in either of our lifetimes (assuming, of course, you aren't over 70,) and arguably the most successful of all time.

That wasn't because he had Vandy and Kentucky on the schedule every year; I'm pretty sure Majors and Battle and Wyatt and Dickey all got to play the conference patsies as well. It is because he did a damned fine job of building a football program to the heights of the sport, maintained it for a while, and then saw it slide without finding the magic formula to rebuild it.

That is frustrating and sad, but also worthy of admiration.
