What advantage does an offense have to only put 6 men on the line of scrimmage? I thought that would be more of a disadvantage.
Thanks, I've been noticing that penalty called more often the last few years and hadn't realized the advantages.Players that line up in the backfield can go in motion and don't have to come set before the snap. Also, a lineman that lines up off the line of scrimmage cuts down on the angles a pass rusher can use to get to the QB.
I think most of the time when it's called due to a receiver being off the line it's just a mistake in alignment, but there's no doubt that Offensive Tackles try to push it to the limit when they have a fast defensive end lined up wide.
doubling that end frees up at least one of the two linebackers on that sideSpeaking of the TE and a 6 man line, should make it easier to double team the defensive end on the tight end side of the line (usually the wide side of the field) and make it easier to run outside of him. Doesn't seem to work too well for UT though. Some people think UT did better with a fullback.
which is why a lot of times you see that, a guard or the tackle will pull to fill that gap.Speaking of the TE and a 6 man line, should make it easier to double team the defensive end on the tight end side of the line (usually the wide side of the field) and make it easier to run outside of him.
