Look, the guy has done wonders for the UT basketball program and done what most people thought would be impossible; that is winning at UT and filing up a 20,000+ seat arena consistently, but who really cares about his house? I think it is pretty tacky for the guy to do a cover story on a magazine about his 10,0000+ sq. foot house when people are loosing their jobs left and right and not knowing if they will be able to keep living in the simple homes that they own.

So I guess People, US Weekly, Life&style and the other celeb tabloid magazines should just go out of business during these tough times?

Disclaimer - My wife reads these things not me :)

I think it is tacky to act as though someone should feel guilty for being blessed. Especially when it is through their own hard work and success.

I'm not saying he shouldn't feel blessed. I think it's great that the guy has been successful and good at what he does and that he can afford a house of that size. The only problem I have with it is that he let a magazine come in and do a spread on his house.

For reference, an entire football field from goal line to goal line is 48,000.

Bill Gates's $97 million dollar estate is listed around 40K sq. ft.

Bruce's Gettysvue abode is nice, but let's be realistic here. . . .

Anybody know how many sq ft. Pete DeBusk's mansion in Halls is? His main house and guest house together have to be at least 25 or 30,000 sq ft. I always thought it was an eyesore in Halls and was dramatically out of place even next to a golf course.

Pearls house received a lot of press here in southern Indiana. Most people were impressed and he is still popular with many local folks.

However, I take exception to his report of being "poor" until the last few years. Believe me, his salary, camps, shoe money, radio shows, advertisements, and all of the extras he recieved from USI fans and backers totaled way into the 100,000 of dollars. I don't know about you folks in Tennessee, but that is way above the poverty level here in southern Indiana.

It was those kind of remarks and behavior that wore thin with me very quickly while he was at USI, although I will admit a bias prior to his coming to USI stemming from the Iowa incident.

Be that as it may...he can still coach basketball, no question, just don't pee down my leg and try to convince me it is raining, i.e. "I was poor until a couple of years ago."

Okay, Pearl may not have been poor, but he was not anything more the middle class either. If this were an established family with generations of wealth, they would have emphatically denied access to do a story on a house....for many reasons including the tacky factor. Pearl is "nouveau riche'" and thus proud to show off his newfound manor. It is easy to get wrapped up in the "materialistic" aspect of being rich when you have never been rich. I am not a fan of it, but I won't disparage him in anyway either. I've seen it for most of my life

Most college coaches are overpaid to be honest.

What do you base that opinion on? The money their success brings into a program? The long hours they work? The constant criticism they usually endure? Take your wealth envy somewhere that it's appreciated.. like George Soros' crappy page or some other BS capitalism-hating site like that.

Sure he was more than middle class, much more. His salary at his former post wasn't nearly what he received at UT, but it was much more than middle class. Affluent would be a more appropriate description before UT, and rich would now be the description.

UWM extends Pearl's contract; His salary will reach $300,000

UWM extends Pearl's contract

His salary will reach $300,000

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee showed its appreciation for the job Bruce Pearl has done by rewarding its fourth-year basketball coach with a lucrative extension of his contract to five years.

The contract calls for Pearl to receive a base salary of approximately $275,000 this year, escalating to more than $300,000 by the fifth year. His base was approximately $230,000 last season.

Technically, according to the US government, to be in the top 10% in this country you have to make 125K+

I disagree. Affluent generally means wealthy. Rich isn't a label exclusively attached to money. Pearl might not even be affluent even now. Affluent generally regards to net worth as well. Having a net worth of 1 million is by today's standards upper middle class. Affluent means net worth of nearly 8 digits.

So no, when he was coach at SIU, he was NOT affluent.
