Memphis' 'wow' coaching list could include Pitino or Pearl : GoMemphisTigers : Your leading source for The University of Memphis Tigers

Pearl, 49, seems to be a much more realistic possibility. According to a source close to Tennessee’s program, Pearl has expressed interest in the position through intermediaries.
The reasons given would be access to the Memphis talent base, which he has not been able to lure to East Tennessee but would fit well with his uptempo style of play.
Pearl would also be one of the few candidates who could dominate the city in much the same way Calipari did through the sheer force of his personality.
Though a move to Memphis may not make sense on the surface, it’s also worth noting that Pearl, who took Tennessee to the Sweet 16 in 2007 and 2008, might also want to escape the SEC East — which just got a whole lot tougher with Calipari at Kentucky.
One potential roadblock to Pearl would be his buyout, which costs $2.5 million if he leaves in the next year. Pearl’s current contract averages $2.3 million per season.
The Knoxville News-Sentinel reported that as of Wednesday afternoon, Memphis had not contacted Tennessee for permission to speak to Pearl

Unfortunately I live in Big 12 country now and only hear about Mizzou and Kansas. I keep up with Vols football, but not too up to date with basketball. Is it really possible that UT could let Pearl get away? By reading some of the posts on VolNation, it sounds like some fans are ready for him to leave. Just curious why some people have soured on Pearl?

Because they are morons and probably don't know one thing about basketball.

They have soured because we had three years of unprecedented success, had our coach get a practice facility built and the arena renovated, and now all of a sudden we arent UCLA, Duke, or UNC. . . the fans that want Pearl gone know absolutely nothing about basketball. There are players on the team right now that are going to be gone next year and its not going to be because of the draft or graduation. . . one of those players was a starting point guard. . . that gives you two options and Im not going to reveal which one it was, but I will say JuJuan Smith was involved.

Pearl is just trying to sweeten his contract here. . . I dont think he really wants to go to Tiger High

Well, Pearl's been mentioned in a speculatory article in the Commercial Appeal. There's no way to avoid it...he's "as good as gone" now.

Pearl is worth whatever he can get somebody to pay him. Memphis St. or UT whoever wants him the most. Me personally I hope he stays with the VOLS.

Time for another wandering in the wilderness. Anyone still have Kevin O'Neil's phone number?

if he wants to leave then so be it. he has been good for TN there is no doubt, i like his energy, but i will say he if winning a NC is a goal of his he will never do it with that offense. also he needs to get the guys he has in line. he said he couldn't get them to press the way he wants. he is the coach, make them, if they don't want to i'd tell them to sit the pine and i'll find someone who will want to play and will bust it.

Unlike your post which oozes of intelligence.

I'm on a phone and don't feel like posting a short story from my phone. Plus, many of you aren't worth me wasting my time on. Just look at our basketball program pre pearl. Look at it now that we have him here and what he is building at tn. We are winning (20 plus games a year) 4 straight NCAA tournament appearences, he can recruit, got us our first number 1 ranking in history. Is that enough or should I go on? Did I please you this time?

I don't think I've ever seen anything so blown out of proportion as this whole notion that there is a large amount of UT fans that have "soured on Pearl" and want him gone. I read all these comments that we are becoming like UK fans and how Pearl has one "bad" season and suddenly we turn on him....that is such bull.

What's happened is some have had the absolute nerve to *GASP* actually question some of the coaching decisions made by Pearl and perhaps suggest he didn't exactly do his best job this season. The ones that keep listing his accomplishments and making the ex-coach comments are the ones making the knee-jerk reactions. You just can't seem to get through your thick skulls that criticism DOES NOT EQUAL "He needs to go". How many times does this need to be explained?

I'm sure there's probably a very small minority that want him gone, but acting like it's a sizable amount of the fanbase is just idiotic.

The Memphis CA has little to no credibility and their mindset is that the Memphis program is bigger than it actually is. I can assure you that they will have a hard time luring anyone to the cesspool we call Memphis and the crappy junior college league they play in.

Like I said, I live in Big 12 country and don't know what the general consensus on Pearl is there. I only hear things on this website and at times there are a lot of outspoken opponents of Pearl. That is why I asked what is going on over in Knoxville. Personally, I like Pearl but I don't follow basketball too much and I didn't know if he had done something off the court that rubbed people the wrong way.

Nothing that you have said supports your assertion that people who are critical of Pearl "are morons and probably don't know one thing about basketball."

Those who have criticized him have made numerous post about X’s and O’s, schemes, in-game coaching adjustments, lack of play inside the paint on undersized teams, coming out flat in big games, undisciplined play and players, etc. Based upon your post, their knowledge about the game of basketball seems much more than yours.

adios pearl, i can think of several coaches who could probably be just as good if not better. Xaviers coach, Nova's coach, Butlers coach, Pitt's coach. altho i think it wld be hard to get nova's and pitts coaches
