From the Tennesseean...
Holding Lofton: UT Coach Bruce Pearl has fired a salvo in the direction of SEC referees.

He said teams are starting to hold sophomore guard Chris Lofton away from the ball, and it was especially apparent against Alabama.

"I'm not doing a good enough job getting him open," Pearl said. "We're not doing a good enough job screening. He's not doing a good enough job back-cutting – and he's being held every play.

"There are a lot of factors why, but he doesn't draw many fouls off the ball."

Will asking the refs to "make the call" in the media, help or hurt Pearl's cause?
We can all see what other teams are doing to Lofton, but I'm not sure calling out the Stripers in the press is going to net Pearl his desired effect...

I understand what he is saying, but it's a tough argument to win. Jump shooters just don't draw fouls; especially off the ball where refs don't pay as much attention. The solution is probably to set more screens and send Lofton to the weight room.

If you ask me, Coach Pearl should treat Lofton in some ways like Duke does with Redick. I'm not saying run the offense completely through him or anything like that, I am only saying run some sets like Duke does to get Redick the ball. I mean there are times when Paulus is at the top of the key with the ball and the other 3 men are responsible for just setting screens and giving Redick the option of which side to go to get the ball off of one of those screens. I think we all know by now that Lofton is capable of coming off screens and making shots.

Imagine this, Wednesday night in Gainesville, Watson has the ball up top with Lofton right under the goal. Bradshaw, Patterson and Wingate are all facing Lofton with responsibilites of setting screens and then posting up once Lofton goes by. But, Lofton sees the defender playing him to the right and instead goes left off of a Bradshaw screen, catches the ball on the left wing, and hits a 3 ball.

That would be all day if you ask me...

The holding on not only Lofton, but our wings as well at UAT last Saturday was well beyond the norm. If that game had been reffed with football refs the linen would have been flying all afternoon.

I do think by calling attention to it may slow it down a little... Also may get a few calls down the road.

Referee's in both bb and fb APPARENTLY don't answer to any authority for incompetence or blindness....I applaud CBP for pointing out their performance and hope CPF will too.

lofton is fairly big, he is 6'2'' 205, thats big for a shooting guard in muscule and weight size.

For the fifth time: Come NCAA tourney time, got to toughen up. No whining. Get yourself open and don't complain when teams target your shooter. Find another shooter.
