She brought the popularity to the sport. She brought the higher salary to the lady basketball coaches. She will always be the best girls coach ever. She paved the way to bring a lot of money to the program. Don't disrespect her by mentioning him in the same storyline with her.

Yes, she did all the OP says, but the way to honor her legacy is to put the current & future players in the best circumstances to continue the winning tradition.

Holly Warlick has made many, many valuable contributions to the LV legacy and should be remembered along with Summitt for the legacy. But one can acknowledge that while still wanting to have a bright outlook for the future and a return to prominence. And it's hard to see Coach Warlick accomplishing that given her inability to adapt to successful offensive strategies.

If it were one small thing & people were hitting the panic button, it would be one thing. But adding up all the evidence (inconsistent or very poor shooting, lack of cohesive offense, disciplinary problems, and current recruiting failures), it certainly looks as though UT has been living on the old "overwhelm with talent" strategy...which isn't even working now against far less "talented" players (who show far better "team" play).

One can despise a lot of GA's personal character attributes and simultaneously point to his superior coaching strategies. Ignoring that doesn't honor Pat, nor does saying that what worked 20 years ago isn't going to consistently make teams successful at the top levels. TENN used to be judged by championships...remember when every UT recruit under CHS could expect to reach a Final Four (and most likely a championship)? Don't just look at UCONN...look at what McGraw has done at Notre Dame (annual contenders). That's where we want to be, and it's hard to see CHW getting us there. Doesn't mean that people "hate" her. She's not Lane Kiffen.

Sorry. Her record and championships do not compare to his.

Yep. He's rewriting the book so to speak. Pat did a fantastic job and had a whale of a career, but I don't think UT fans can just dismiss or overlook what he's doing at UConn. It's a run of excellence that may not be equaled.....Wooden-esque.

I agree that Pat pioneered WCBB and the women's game (and college basketball in general) wouldn't be what it is today without her. With that said, I think Geno has carried the torch, and in doing so, evolved the game. Both are highly accomplished in their own ways.

That is a very fair statement. :hi:

The statement of the thread title that Pat pioneered women's basketball is correct.

But this is not news..

Guess I'm confused on the point of saying all this. Understood info

I find people who think Pat padded her win totals during a time when no one else had decent players or decent programs to be lacking in their knowledge of the history of womens basketball. Coach Summit was not only building a dynasty at Tennessee, she was literally building women's basketball as we know it today. She had to go in front of the Tennessee legislature and beg to have high school girls basketball's 6 on 6 rules changed. She was given cast off uniforms, an ancient gym to play in and was paid what was, even for the time, a ridiculous and insulting salary. Imanenema isn't worthy to carry Pat's bra.

I will give the Devil his due, Genno has done amazing things in women's basketball. He has taken the game up several notches. That being said, do not trivialize Pat's hand in making women's basketball what it has become. She took the game from nothing to what it has become. You cannot measure Pat's influence upon the game by championships, wins and perfect seasons, no more than you can use the same measurements to measure William Neismith's impact on the game of basketball.

Look up Marianne Stanley. SHE pioneered Women's Basketball. With no Marianne there would be no Pat.

So you think he's paying players?

Despite their differences, Auriemma has acknowledged that he thought Pat Summitt was a great coach, and that she paved the way for all that has followed her. This is a quote from an interview with ESPNW that speaks specifically to her coaching ability - "Pat got her players to buy in and play the exact style she wanted them to play. That's great coaching."

In the same interview, he credits Summitt for pushing him to be better and to achieve things he didn't believe were possible.
