When asked if she could understand that a coach might occasionally break the rules, because of the pressure to win and produce championships, she responded:

"I've never compromised (the rules) at all, and if I did, they should fire me."

Thoughts?

Seems that she is clear on her support for Pearl---he should be fired. Guess he won't be consulting with her as much this year.

She answered that question exactly as I would have expected she would.

Maybe she could be his mentor. That's the popular thing to do these days.

If you have to cheat to win at girls basketball there are no winners.

Heard this on the radio, and I thought it fit perfectly. It's Will West's old line, "She's not saying, she's just saying".

It's really a silly question. Asking a women's basketball coach to comment about men's basketball recruiting ethics is like asking a member of the Coalfield High student council to speak on codes of conduct for the US Senate.

You guys are conveniently leaving out the part of her quote that clearly supports a struggling co-worker. Typical.

“This obviously was difficult for all of us, but I'm going to support him and I know he's the kind of guy that will bounce back,'' Summitt said. “Hopefully people will understand. We all make mistakes, and we learn from them and we have to move on.''

supporting a person you know and thinking they should keep their position are 2 different things. She's been around long enough to know what the statement quoted in the OP would mean

Agree she should be fired because she can get anyone she want.

All that proves is that Summit holds herself to higher ethical standards than what she expects out of the likes of Bruce Pearl. No surprise there.

Not sure why it's any surprise to some.

I agree that she left us to do some interpretting here but I don't think she was implying Pearl should lose his job based on the question that was asked. She was asked a question specifically about her situation and she answered with what she thought about her situation.

She also said she considers him as close as a brother. Not the kind of thing you say about a guy you want kicked out of the building.

“For me, I've never compromised, at all, and I wouldn't, and if I did they should fire me. I've been there too long.'' Left that out on the end there, I think it put's it into context a little better. JMO

I agree with you whole-heartedly there Hat. I am sure she holds herself to a higher standard than she does anyone else. All I'm saying is the quote wasn't that black and white. Summitt did not and will not say that Pearl should lose his job.

Never understood why a guy like Geno wouldn't want to coach guys. I don't think I would be able to have the ego he has because I was a good girls coach. I would need to challenge myself against other men.

I see where you are coming from there but I think an argument could be made that he challenges himself against other men in many of the games they play where the opposing team is coached by a male.

But, I thought everyone broke the rules and couldn't be competitive without doing so?

They do!

Cant compare womans b-ball with mens basketball and football. It is not even comparable!

I cant believe there are still people who dont believe everyone breaks the rules at least sometimes.
