Since Bill Battle's coaching career was only 7 years at UT,it's compared with the last 7 years of Majors/Fulmer's UT coaching careers.

Battle (fired)

W-8.48
L-3.142

Majors (fired)

W-8.00
L-3.14

Fulmer (employed-2 plus mil a year)

W-8.71
L-3.85

Call me when Fulmer upsets the administration, falls out of favor with the big money, becomes hard to work for and shows an inability to beat Alabama and I'll listen to this comparison.

Not saying that you can't question the job Fulmer is doing, but I don't think his situation is even slightly comparable to Battle who nuked the program backwards 10 years or Majors who arguaby dug his own grave.

You know, history always repeats itself. Some knuckleheads never quit.:banghead2:

Phillip Fulmer could go 12-0 and win the SEC and National Championship and some dingbat Negavols would be raising hell if any team scored on the Vols that season. Similarly, if his teams fail to surpass the famous Georgia Tech vs. Cumberland U. (200+ to 0)score in every game the same old Negavols will/would be asking for his head.

Jesus Christ could be coaching the Vols and our gloriously incessant Negavols would be calling for his head because he wears sandals, doesn't chew Red Man and have a "mammy you duh most" tatoo on his shoulder.:furious3:

Why don't all you Negvols apply for the head coaching job after Coach Fulmer retires. Surely you have your playbooks up to date along with your resumes.:moon2:

Gives us a break and get a life!:realmad:

Yeah and on the flip side, fans like you could go 0-12 and still find excuses for Phil Fulmer. Why don't all you Posivols start pulling for Vandy since you don't have enough pride to be concerned by the decline in performance.:realmad:

It's always like this after a loss. I remember walking out of the stadium after losing to Alabama 9-6 in 1990 and people were angrily talking about wanting Majors run out of town. Nevermind that we had just gone 11-1 and won the SEC in 1989 and went on to win the SEC again in 1990.

I go back to the Bowden Wyatt era at UT when we were lucky to win 4 or 5 games a year (admittedly we only played 10 games a year then). Dickey was a major improvement there and brought the team back to prominence. Battle if you look at his record won with the players that Dickey left him but when his players came in he didn't have a clue (He liked the fast linemen that could get downfield to block, but the problem was they were so small no one could get down field for them to block for. I got tired of his show every week talking about how the upcoming opponent would tilt the field when they came out). Majors record could have been better, bt his first years were hampered by the Battle recruits. The main problem I had with Majors was that it would seem that every 4 or 5 years we would have a bad record like the year that we lost 6 in a row. I think that Fulmer got off to a good atart, but he and his staff have become complacent and gotten in s rut and don't seem to know how to get out of it.

I remember Majors got so much heck from the fans, then when we would win. In 1988, we went like 5-6 and then in 1989, he turned turned it around with an 11-1 season. Fulmer-like, but everyone is looking for that SEC crown. I will take the two loss seasons with a few tie breaker SEC titles around our waist.

A noteable note about hte 5-6 season. We opened 0-5 and then won 6 straight to go 6-5, leading into the 11-1 season. He pulled off a substantial turn-around to a dismal season and went 17-1 during that stretch.

I don't remember much about Battle and Dickey at the time, although I was following the Vols as a young teen then. We didn't have cable, and you didn't have the TV coverage. So, I got most of my info off of News Sentinal clips my granddad would clip for me and always talekd about UT football. Then in '79 UT signed Willie Gault from my highschool, and tailgated in Vic Vandergriff and 2 others with him. Through the years they signed several more from Griffin, with I think Fred White being the most recent. Back then I didn't clue in much to the coaching. Just the team. And even specific memories of past popular players are scattered. I'd only get to see a couple of games a year, plus articles. My only solid knowledge of coaching was Majors and Fulmer.

Fulmer is hard to really get a handle on because he is a tale of two seasons.

On one hand, he had a very good run from roughly 1993-1998. The black mark is that he had a hard time bringing it home from time to time, see FL.

On the other hand, they've pretty mediocre since then. So what to do?

Remember, despite all his "win % stats," he's only won ONE BCS bowl game in his entire career. But at the same time, he had won two SECC and one NC.

It's sort of football purgatory.

The rap on Johnny was he was too much of a hard a$$...I think we were playing Penn State in the Fiesta bowl and just wiping the turf with them until JM got on someone's case in a big way. The story goes that the team sat down on him in the second half.

The story that I heard was that Majors called one of our players a (racial slurr). After that, some of the players made it a point to screw up on the field. It's hard to imagine any player giving up on his team but I did hear this story from someone. Does anyone else have anything to add to the supposed story?
