Over my years as a vol fan I started with Dickey, Battle, Majors, and Fulmer. Wonder how they would rank with fans today.:dunno:

Well seeing how CPF was the only one to lead UT to a NC and people have called for his head for years.... not too good. Majors would have bought time with the Sugar Bowl victory over Miami but who knows?

all four were excellent coaches. all had their problems. dickey was a martinet. battle didn't have the first clue about recruiting. majors took us about as far as he could take us and no higher (a respectable level of mediocrity, but i got damned tired of wondering who our appalachin state would be--remember rutgers?). fulmer, well, his first ten years, i was pretty satisfied, but i've got to admit that he seems to have become satisfied with good but not great teams. but, remember, if he goes, we lose one of the all time great recruiters. four and five star athletes can atone for a lot of coaching incompetence.

Fulmers first 6 years or so with Manning, Martin and Shuler were similar to Dickey's tenure. Fulmer recently is bringing us towards the last few days of Bill Battle.

Who has the National Championship under his belt? Therefore he is better than the other coaches. Good try TVA

I'd have to say because, since you need a head coach in football. But hey TVA, keep trolling.

There are probably 30 coaches in the country that could have won with that Vol team and Al Wilson leading the lockerroom. Fulmer isn't that great...

he did recruit all those guys to come to UT though
Fulmer is a good recruiter... I will give him that. But I'm sure that you give another coach the same facilities and they could do just as well if they have good assistants that can recruit.

Trooper Taylor has bailed out Fulmer recently. If Trooper goes and Fulmer is still around, you will see the talent level drop even more...

I don't remember Majors to well because I was a young buck when he was here, but like I do many times in here I'll refer back to my old man.

I do remember my dad always saying, and even when they had that interview with Majors during the Hall of Fame Bowl against Boston College, that Majors was just past his prime. He told me, "He was stuck in his old ways and didn't adapt to the new game."

Anyone else feel that way or was my old man delusional?

Yeah. What's even scarrier is the fact that your dad was saying that in the late 80's-early 90's and we are still essentially running the Walt Harris offense of the mid 80's. :ermm:

The rap on Johnny was he was too much of a hard a$$...I think we were playing Penn State in the Fiesta bowl and just wiping the turf with them until JM got on someone's case in a big way. The story goes that the team sat down on him in the second half.

Since Bill Battle's coaching career was only 7 years at UT,it's compared with the last 7 years of Majors/Fulmer's UT coaching careers.

Battle (fired)

W-8.48
L-3.142

Majors (fired)

W-8.00
L-3.14

Fulmer (employed-2 plus mil a year)

W-8.71
L-3.85

if your satisfied with a 14-12 record over the past 2 years plus last weeks game....Fulmer is your man....people it took us from 93-98 to loose that many games...this program is in a slide and the game has passed many of our coaches....the luster is gone...time to move to higher ground and fulmer and this coaching staff will not take us there.

Fulmer's averaged what Zook did at Florida..."former" Zook...nice stats...way to come prepared.

I remember Majors got so much heck from the fans, then when we would win. In 1988, we went like 5-6 and then in 1989, he turned turned it around with an 11-1 season. Fulmer-like, but everyone is looking for that SEC crown. I will take the two loss seasons with a few tie breaker SEC titles around our waist.

I was in high school during the 80s and really started paying attn to UT football about that time. I can remember many a saturday sitting in the den with my dad and him complaining about the same thing. Though Majors did have a decent record right up until the end, his complete and utter lack of imagination and adaptation were hard to watch on a weekly basis.

That is the way I feel of the UT program over the last few years.

I have a unique perspective living in Louisville and watching the ascension of the Cards into an explosive, exciting, and successful football squad over the past decade. Where did that come from? An out of the blue surge in recruiting or talent level? No, I think it began with the coaching and innovations in their style of play - which then led to more success on the field and in recruiting.

It's a chicken and egg thing I know. Just my :twocents:

Yeah buddy, I remember an 0-6 start. Can you imagine how that would go down today?

You know, history always repeats itself. Some knuckleheads never quit.:banghead2:

Phillip Fulmer could go 12-0 and win the SEC and National Championship and some dingbat Negavols would be raising hell if any team scored on the Vols that season. Similarly, if his teams fail to surpass the famous Georgia Tech vs. Cumberland U. (200+ to 0)score in every game the same old Negavols will/would be asking for his head.

Jesus Christ could be coaching the Vols and our gloriously incessant Negavols would be calling for his head because he wears sandals, doesn't chew Red Man and have a "mammy you duh most" tatoo on his shoulder.:furious3:

Why don't all you Negvols apply for the head coaching job after Coach Fulmer retires. Surely you have your playbooks up to date along with your resumes.:moon2:

Gives us a break and get a life!:realmad:
