This thread is directed at whomever claims to be calling our offensive play calls. Our Defense is terrific - thank God for Coach Jim "Blitz" Knowles - hope he stays for his 3 year contract.

Last week our QBs got sacked 10 times. 10 times?? Was that a record at home? My God, and that is not to mention the unproductive scrambles and errant throws caused by the Texas rush.

So, what did our offensive coaching staff learn from that. ZERO, absolutely ZERO. Heupel, who one must assume is stilll calling offensive plays, continued to put Faizon in harms way by dropping him back, time and time and time again. We unfortunately though did not fix the woes of the offensive line, at least in the first half.

When was the last time any of us had to wait till 2 minutes left in the HALF before we got our passing yards into positive territory? What? Faizon had zero passing yards - thank God George didn't bail on UT! With the amount of firepower and potential weapons on the offensive side of the ball, we went nearly a complete half in Neyland with zero passing yards? (And I am not ignoring that Auburn is a decent team) Is this possible? We have tight ends who can catch the ball but, only if you THROW IT TO THEM. We have amazing wide receivers but, ONLY IF YOU THROW IT TO THEM.

I say it is time for Coach Heupel to give up his play calling and focus on being a head coach. He has clearly lost the touch and is absolutely NOT ADJUSTING to the defenses we play (our offsense was also slow in the first half against our earlier foes). Lots and lots of college and pro football teams have issues with their offensive lines. These teams win games by adjusting their play calling. Short passes. Get under Center for a slant pass. Roll out for Gods sake. Dink. Doink. This opens up the running game. Sorry, I know this is play calling 101, but how long can we sit by and watch us embarass ourselves with horrible play calling - especially at home?

Luckily, DeSean got some holes opened in the second half and was the man/player we know he can be. But up until a good way into the third quarter, our offense was DOA - and one cannot simply say it was 100% on execution. In the third quarter, I think Auburn's defense simply got tired. Our D magnificently shut down Auburns offense, so their D was on the field a lot.

Yes, a Win is a Win is a Win but, how many of you sat through the first half saying to yourself "man, our offense stinks'?

Congrats to the players for hanging tough and finishing the game. We appreciate y'alls efforts on and off the field.

I think we should change the title of this thread to Embarrassing Post.

Yes, the offense struggled early. But the staff made the necessary changes and adjustments, and the team responded. Nothing embarrassing about an SEC win.

Well, WTF other would you expect from the OP? Volador is always first in line to turn a Vol victory into defeat. If he really was a VFL, and I'm pretty sure he isn't, he should quietly disappear.

I honestly didn’t waste time reading all this, but I’ll take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day!

He adjusted by running the ball nearly every play and picking his moments to pass and the backup QB (another adjustment) was more effective because of it. I will never be embarrassed by an SEC win.
This. We started the game with a ton of passes to the outside to stretch out the secondary, then pounded them with the running game.

I didn't think we'd start the year off as playoff contenders, and we didn't. Being pragmatic, I'm just hoping we end the year looking like playoff contenders. We don't yet.

I'm not claiming a moral victory for covering the spread and being a play away from beating #1 Texas, and I'm sure as hell not claiming a moral loss for covering the spread in a 2 score SEC win.

Many of us (myself included) had expectations of an 8-4 season. Miss me with any "settling for mediocrity BS". If I don't think we look like a serious 2027 playoff contender at season's end, I'll probably start to question and criticize Heupel more. What I'm not gonna do is cry like a bIotch over milk that hasn't been spilled.

Heupel has impressed me with his offense 3/5 years, disappointed me 1 year, and 2024 was about what I expected. His defense has only impressed me 1/5 years.
I'm more relieved that with the addition of Knowles we're able to field a legit defense this year than I am worried Heupel won't be able to field a compotent offense.

Don't mind me while I continue to root for us to improve every week and hopefully over achieve. I'll be here all year.

GIt can say a lot about the hearto Vols
And to think this is the same Coach who has a perennially a top Five offense in the NCAAF. I’m trying to understand your logic. ALL TEAMS HAVE REBUILDING YEARS. Sometimes you have to win ugly. Sometimes it can say a lot about the heart and character of the team . Also luck didn’t open those holes for Bishop. Pure grit and determination and a strong will did. GMAC gave us the boost we needed. I’m not writing off Brandon but….. it’s apparent he is not ready for prime time and has not caught up with the speed of the game. And the only way to know that was baptism by fire. GMAC probably takes over and starts and we see a big improvement. I’m an old man and have figured out to sit back and enjoy the ride

I’ll take a win any day. But I won’t paint heup out to be coach of the year just because he fixed a problem of his own creating. After watching the last few games, it’s hard to believe FB should’ve ever been the starter.

And if he truly thought so then we are failing in practice. I understand practice will never be a game, but we obviously didn’t put an ounce of pressure on FB to see how he’d respond.

OP
The Vols won by 10 and pretty much controlled the second half. The adjustments made were the reason we are enjoying a double digit victory this morning. Also, Heupel may have found a QB in a somewhat similar situation to the 2021 season.

One of the stupider posts I’ve read. I’m actually angry at myself for reading the whole post. Basically everything changed when Mac got on the field and got comfortable.

I thought I had that guy on ignore, but for some reason I could see the post. Got a little ways in, looked at the moniker, then found the ignore button.

Some people love being miserable and want others to join them. Not worth the head space.
