I've been reading a lot this weekend on recruiting and the rankings so far. I realize there's still a lot to happen before signing day, but it looks like Bama and Florida are both heading toward top 10 classes (Bama top 5).

Obviously, CLK and staff have had a lot of catching up to do and cannot be blamed if we don't have a huge class. But looking forward, can we be competitive on the field next year when those school already had All-Americans (Tebow, etc) and we aren't keeping pass in the recruiting battle? And if we do poorly next year, will that spill over to the 2010 class?

don't worry about next year's class. It will be in the top 5 or even better. I also don't think having a bad record will hurt us next year either because Bama had a 7-6 record in '07 and still had the #1 class.

I dont really see a big talent gap. the play of our line... both of them. has probably been the biggest dropoff weve had. when we get back to blowing people off the ball on offense and getting off the field on defense we will be winning. most of our lack of success i attribute to scheme, coaching, and then talent. we have the athletes, we need some big guys that will play hard

I hope you're right. But Saban (curse him) was a more proven commodity after a 7-6 year and obviously had Bama headed in the wrong direction. And they also whooped our tails that year.

I dont think its a talent gap, i just think you have to have the right defense to defend florida. Florida is beatable, just ask Ole Miss. Jump on them early and keep your foot on the gas. I would go with a 4-2-5 to stop the run and make them one demensional. I believe ball control is key as well in a victory over florida.

The same goes for Bama, look at the Sugar Bowl film.
The Utes jumped all over them and made them self implode and point fingers, Again score early and keep your foot on the gas.

All sounds simple but its very difficult.

Any parts yall disagree with, im open to opinions.

I guess you guys are forgetting we had a top ranked class two years ago. Also our roster has been built with highly ranked classes. The players just haven't ever really been developed.

Bama did a great job developing what it had when Saban got there. They played a lot of Freshmen this year, and some played extremely well, but they took what they had and improved it. Our OL and DL can get better right away with better coaching. If it does we will be OK next year, and better the year after that.

We have talent coming back, and decent depth. This years recruiting class will be top 15 pushing top 10 when all is said and done. 2010 will be top 10 class. Opening up competition at all positions will build a fire in these goes to go out and practice/play hard every day. 2009 will be 8-9 wins. 2010 will be a chance to win the conference with Tebow gone.

and the #23 and #35 ranked classes surrounding that year (and a few of the more highly ranked from those classes are gone now). Don't act like this team has AA's sitting on the bench waiting for a spot to open

I think Tebow will be force to really read our defense this year. Monte's defense will confuse him and contrary to what you all think he will be getting smashed by our new aggresive defense. I think Chris Donald will be the key. If he plays like he's capable of we will handle Florida. Donald's the type of enforcer that can stop all of the Tebow scrambling.

You hit the nail on the head...

I am anxious to see what Monte throws at Tebow, and in turn how Tebow reads it. That's what football is all about.

I honestly believe Monte will throw something at Tebow he hasn't ever seen before.

Last year's class wasn't terrible. Had players that weren't college ready but they were pretty good athletes. We just didn't get enough good linemen last year.

It isn't like you have to have a better four year average of recruiting ranks than your opponent to beat them. As long as we are drawing in top talent, it doesn't matter if it's ranked 5, 10, or 15. It's about development and execution.

The Vols have talent--but the team has been coached poorly in recent years. I think we'll see a big difference with the new staff--starting with more TOUGHNESS. Much will depend on how much the passing game--almost laughably inept last yea--improves. Without MUCH better QB/WR play, the Vols will struggle again.

As for florida: nobody has been able to stop them consistently. My take is that, first and foremost, you have to stop tebow and the run game--and Oklahoma did that pretty well for a while and might have taken command of that game had they not blown two excellent scoring opportunities and put pressure on the gators. Until the Vols--or anybody else--learn to stop tebow on a third and three--the gators will be tough to beat. But it's more than just tebow: The spread, when run properly with good athletes--is tough to defend because it puts defenders on their heels for a second. I give florida credit for executing it so damn well; it's not exactly a simple offense--and yet they very rarely make turn the ball over or make ANY mistakes. If I were a DC, I'd blitz more and take my chances!

If we score on the other two redzone opportunities this past year tell me what the differential would be. Turnovers beat us more than Florida. Also we'll see how good you are without Harvin and Murphy.

OL and DL can make up a lot of the gap, ask the bammers.

And it is development, as much as talent.

In reality Kiffin has more to work with than Saban started with at Bama. So if he just develops the talent we will have a good season.

I tend to agree with that, and Saban was not scared to put his young talent on the field.
I think Lane has the same philosophy.

Alabama's defense had no Eric Berry, Rico Mccoy, Dennis Rogan, Demetrice Morley(5 star), Chris Donald(5 star), Ben Martin, Chris Walker, Gerald Williams. These are guys that Saban would have loved to have. He made walk-ons at safety into All-Americans. Imagine what our guys will do with a good coach.
