I have been in Knoxville long enough now to post my take on the members of the sports radio station. I am only going to speak of the shows I have listened to that run from 6am - 7pm weekdays.

Will West - is the most informed and talented "Radio" person on that staff at 99.1. He transcends Knoxville sports radio and could work anywhere in the nation, even on a nationally syndicated show.

Dave Hooker - is perhaps the 2nd best talent they have over there, he was fantastic on the morning show before he left to focus on writing for KNS. I like his show.

Jimmy Hyams(sp?) - could work anywhere in the SEC states and imo is very fair when discussing other teams in the SEC. I like him a lot.

Josh Ward - another good talent at the station, I like him too.

John Wilkerson - old school sports talk host, what you see is what you get, I like him, he works well with Jimmy.

Chip Cain - I know this will be a minority opinion, but this guy works well with Josh. Their third hour of talk is one of the best on 99.1, (lighter side of sports). I know they don't take a ton of calls, but we get enough calls from the morning and afternoon shows, sheesh, I don't need to hear another Volfan opinion of the Lane Kiffen hire. I digress, Cain/Ward bounce off of each other well, I enjoy it. I think they should just make the three hours a lighter side show and let it go where it may.

Doc and Jeff - are horrible. I don't have the time right now in this post to type all the issues I have heard from these two. TERRIBLE.

Heather - would work great with another host.

That brings me to an idea, that will never happen but would be a great set-up:

6am-10am:
Show: Morning Two-fers (Two people on show, get it?)
Will West and Heather Harrington morning show

10am - 12pm: Keep the same (KNS Sports page needs no fix) I would like to see it stick with Dave and John Adams

12pm-3pm:
Show: You Can't be Serious, Sports show
Josh Ward, Chip Cain, and add-in a weekly guest, ie Pennington or Hodge.

3pm-7pm:
Again, no fix needed.

i have to agree with you about Will West. everytime the guy chimes in, he always says something 1) informative or 2) hilarious. he should definetely have his own show.

i thought that when they took jim rome off the air that there was a possibility for west to get his own show.

the only guy on the station i don't really care for is john adams. he's always extremely negative, but tries to disguise it as objectivity. for example, the other day they were discussing good jobs for fulmer, a caller mentioned colorado, hooker agreed. adams, however, decided that colorado state would be a better fit, because "there's less competition". he was implying that fulmer can't win in a competitive conference. he then went on to mention another poor team from a poor conference when a caller suggested another team in a similar situation as colorado. the guy is smug, condescending and egotistical.

i don't want this thread to turn into a john adams hate or love fest, i just thought i would post my opinion.

The implication about Fulmer not being able to win in a competitive conference was right on the money as proven by the last eight years or so, and as proven by the fact that Fulmer is no longer coaching here. Forget last century. And Adams is indeed biased, but in many cases, such as with Fulmer, he is right on.

i understand where adams is trying to come from, but the SEC east is far different than the Big 12 north. and fulmer isn't any more likely to succeed at colorado state than colorado because it's conference is "less competitive". one could argue that it's easier to win at colorado because they have better facilities than CSU, so recruiting would be easier.

can fulmer compete for SEC championships every year? apparently not, but put him in the ACC, or a conference in the like, i believe he would have a shot.

it just seemed, that instead of answering the question honestly, he was throwing another jab at fulmer. it gets old. i would turn it off, but i enjoy hooker.

If your at Colorado now a days, you probably have no shot with the OU/Texas/Texas Tech/Mizzou/Nebraska's of the world, while at Colorado State, you can probably build up a program to a higher mid major level, than you could bringing someone up to a top flight in the country level.

Sorry if its worded kinda badly

I'll agree on most of what GatorboyinTenn said. Only exceptions are Heather Harrington and Josh Ward/Chip Cain show.

I can not stand the morning show. Whenver I hear Jacoby talk about Tennessee Tech or Ohio State and whatever he is saying, I scream in my truck. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Micky D is just a grumpy old man who somehow missed his chance in getting an a** whipping when he was younger. I think one good one would put him into some sort of reality.

Whenever Heather talks I do the same scream as for Jacoby. She never has anything good to say and when she does it doesn't matter b/c her voice is so annoying.

The lighter side of sports is the stupidest I've ever listened to. Although I don't catch this one too often b/c of the time it is on. I wish they would've kept Rome.

I used to kinda like Jimmy Hyams until Fulmer was let go. His take on this new process we are going through is so negative and he sounds like Kermit the Frog when he talks.

Gatorboy...you completely missed the best host. That is Tony Basilio on 1180am ...11a-2p M-F. Tony keeps it real.

i agree with the better part of this post. Will West is going places. Heather is actually better than Doc and Jeff combined. And Hyams isn't as bad as people think.

And Hyams isn't as bad as people think.
One of Hyams big problems, it seems to me, is that he doesn't do enough research on things that he is often questioned about. He often answers queries with, "I don't know," or I haven't checked, or I will check, or something similar. He seems to especially be behind the eight ball on college football recruiting, both on some rules and also on the high school talent pool nationwide. He obviously cannot know everything, but he certainly, as a would-be journalist/media person, should be familiar with recruits that UT might be interested in nationwide, because that is how UT recruits. And if he is going to be a media savant in this market. Some players UT would go after he knows of, but some he hasn't a clue about, even a 5*, such as the southern California QB whose name was mentioned earlier. But, Hyams apparently is entrenched in this market, having been here almost 25 years.

anyone notice how often jeff makes an incredibly unfunny joke and then laughs his head off while everyone else is dead silent?

Perfect analysis about Hyams. He says I don't know way too much or let me check. I can sit on the radio say i don't know and then look up stats to read off. And as fast as I type and search I might be able to do it on the fly quite a bit as well.

I stopped listening to most of these guys because I found them boring, especially when they are taking listener calls.

If they dont know the latest on the UT program, why can't they simply find the people who do and interview them on the show? And find some interesting callers. Take a few notes from Jim Rome and find some entertaining guests and callers and build the show around that.

Jim Rome is him repeating himself overcame over again, lots of dead air, a few decent guests, and stupid listeners (clones) sending stupid texts.

Something is wrong with America

Wow, have you tried to listen to the morning show, without Heather? I mean she is no radio superstar BUT these two alone are terribad.

Why can't Will get a word in? Does Doc know that WIll has more talent than him and Jeff, so he keeps him stifled? Will may know this and has to bite his tongue due to the lack of options in radio in Knoxville.

sad

We are so lightning fast on sports news, especially UT sports, I know about things hours if not days a head of it getting on sports talk!

Why do I seem to hear the same callers everyday on those shows anyway???

Seriously bad... If you have ever lived in another decent size market, you know how bad the "animal" is. I like 1180 but it doesn't seem to come in 5 miles out of the city. What would it take to get a real sports station in this town. 24 hours, either on a clear AM station or a FM with decent power???? I have lived in numerous markets abnd this is by far the worst. I have to give 104.5 in nashville lots of props, good mix of local/national, and can always pick it up. Not huge on PLasters views all the time but hey... If I agreed all the time it would be boring

I hate how n one on 990 knows anything about national stories. I here stuf being discussed on ESPN or their radio and the animal get to it a day or two later. Sometimes the midday show is on point but not many times.
