I haven't looked over the history of this & other New Year's Day Bowls, but I'm guessing in a more 'typical' season, the Outback would ideally host 2 loss teams? I understand nothing is typical this season...

My question is this: By taking Tennessee, is the Outback fulfilling an obligation based on its (and a few other upper-tier, non-BCS bowls') agreement to take conference runner-ups an agreed # of times within a set span? I don't know the specs of this deal, but I understand such an agreement was reached a couple years ago involving some of these bowl hosts?

Is this any part of the reason we're going to the Outback...would we be going otherwise with 4 losses?

The Outback won't get 1 loss teams. If they don't make the BCS, they will go to the Capital 1 Bowl.

i think the outback bowl had two options: Tennessee or Auburn. Tennessee travels better = more revenue.

great info guys, but can anyone address this agreement and whether it might account to some degree for our going to this bowl?

I am pretty sure they were going to pick between us and Auburn. They figured that either team would be ok to take. The might has well take us because they have to take a SECCG loser every 3 years or so. They had not done so, so in the next couple years they would have had to take one anyways, so they chose to go ahead and get it out of the way.

if this is accurate, it answers my question. however, I don't think bowls every really lose by choosing us...Vol fans throw bank.

I'm sure that since we played in Atlanta for the SEC championship that Hamilton guarenteed UT would buy so many tickets in advance. Otherwise we would have likely gone to the Chicken-Fil-A.

I personally like Tampa better than Atlanta, Orlando or Dallas as far as bowl trips.

to protect conference loser, capital, outback and cotton had to pick them atleast once every 4 years.. i guess... capital one gets the first choice and they picked florida.. outback picked us and so now i think they are not obligated to pick a conference loser in the next 4 years..
