I posted a few years ago we would be decently good but to have a great or very good team would take a few years, bc we lacked experience and depth.

Well now we have both. So there are now a few question. Arks heading into the season that if we answer then we may have a great season.....

1. Will Coaching be a strength, and improved?
2. Will our oline be a strength finally?
3. Will we hv good RB depth?
4. Will our Dline be s strength or a glaring weakness again?
5. Will our dbs play really well or continue to get burned?

If we pass these questions then we will hv great season. We have all the other positions covered IMO...

To me, 4 is biggest question, and #6...will one of our QB's be a rain maker. Certainly many reasons for off-season optimism, but this many questions to be answered is also why pre-season predictions are all over the board.

To me the biggest question is Will every one on our team be injured again? If not I think we have a good season.

Off topic but I just watched the replay of the Florida and Georgia games. Man oh man those two games have me so hype. To see the faces of the enemy after those wins priceless. The season can't get here fast enough. GO VOLS

How do you not question having to deal with a new QB with a new OC, neither have which we really have any idea about their game day abilities? So add that your questions about our O-line & D-line, which are a must to succeed in the SEC, and you have a more realistic picture of what we are facing.

I'm not sure where all this confidence keeps coming from. We have some serious unknowns entering this season.

Because VN posters know more than every member of the sports media who have Tennessee way beyond the top 20

One would think that the OLine will be a huge improvement, especially from a strength stand point. You smell what the Rock is cooking. Better talent, and debt.
Great teams start at the line of scrimmage.

I expect this team to overall more disciplined than previous teams. That will help our DB's,who have been horribly coached, technique wise.

RB debt is a huge question mark.

QB will be a wait and see, though Dormady has had 3 spring practices and should be ready to roll.

OC Scott, pre game plan should be no problem at all, it's when things don't go as planned, can he adjust.

Looking forward to a great year!!

GO BIG ORANGE!!!

His confidence seems to come from being optimistic about the 5 serious unknowns he listed.

Can't speak for him, but it's possible the QB situation isn't as serious a "question" as the other 5...in his opinion. And his first "question " was about new coaching.

I'm not sure where all the confidence that we're gonna suck comes from.

I really think a larger question to ask is "Can we stay reasonably healthy and avoid catastrophic injuries? That's the key to the DL and OL success. Last season was the worst I had witnessed in 50 years of following the Vols....discussion begins and ends there.,..

Dude, it's called being a fan.

A typical Beatles fan in the '60s didn't wonder whether the next album would suck or be great. He didn't wonder whether Oko and John's relationship would sour the band. He didn't ask if the band's recent delve into Eastern religions would hurt their music. He simply knew the next album would be great, because he was a fan of the band.

As fans, some of us spend way too much time looking "under the hood" of our football team, pretending like we understand what we see there, pretending like we're capable of discerning the future from what little we know.

Sometimes being a fan is just sitting back and having great pride for, excitement about, and eagerness to continue to follow our team.

There's nothing wrong with exuberance as a fan. It doesn't even have to be rational. It can just...be. Let it be.

Confidence, indeed.

How do you get this from the OP?

Seriously, do some of you not even try?

I wasn't responding to the OP. I was making a general comment about the disparity between some posters optimism and sports media projections for this team.

Everyone on our team wasn't injured last season...to say otherwise is disingenuous. Every team has injuries. Florida was missing 7 starters when they went to LSU late in the season and wrapped up the East. Some teams deal well with their injuries, some don't.....we fell in the "don't" category last year.

What's really gonna determine our season, imho, is the level of physicality and player development this new staff can get out of an overall experienced, talented roster. And if Dormady can step up and play at a high level from the pocket, I think we'll have a successful season....not a championship one, but a successful one.

Yeah, but those same Beatles fans didn't scream for Paul or John to be fired if the next album wasn't as good as they wanted it to be!! :)

In making a general comment in responding to CA who was responding to the OP, I think that makes you guilty by association.

Just being honest, I think you both just enjoy taking shots at anything with mustard seed sized optimism. The question is why? Maybe to retaliate against the others that take their shots at anyone with any amount of criticism? If so, that's fair....in one of the other dozens of threads already tainted by it. This wasn't one of them.

I don't think the OP said anything that hasn't already been discussed, but with the exception of mentioning our QB issue, he pretty much just said, if we answer those 5 questions (unknowns) with success, we "may" have a great year. Wtf is wrong with that? Lol, I don't get it.

You're cherry picking my posts to fit your agenda. I have posted more than once in the last several days what a great recruiting class this is right now and giving Butch full credit for it. The problem for posters like yourself is that if it's not sunshine and Butch love 24/7 then you're a negavol and Butch hater. Believe it or not, it actually IS possible to be both critical of a coach for his failures and credit for his accomplishments.

You've lost your mind.

Cherry picking your post? Irony. Tell me what my agenda is. Great, you've complimented Butch's top 5 recruiting class, what else? "Posters like me" pumping sunshine and Butch love 24/7? And, you don't think I know the difference between legitimate criticism and stupid crap? Wtf is wrong with you?

I look forward to your answers.

For me it's more fun thinking about how good or great we can be rather than considering how bad we could be.

Avoiding injuries will be key again. We have talent and we have stay fresh depth. I'm not so sure we can double up on injuries and still get the same production from our 3s. The 2s would start if they were better than the 1s. Often players either wilt in the lime light or ball out. Until the lights come on and given the chance, it's really difficult to tell.

I like our chances.

I'll see you in Atlanta. Hopefully 3 times.

Go Vols!

The sooner you realize you have no control over any of that, the closer you will be to learning to enjoy Tennessee Football.
