Our WR Talent

Not the best by a large margin...I do think that Brandon Warren has a great opportunity to make a name for himself though...He has a LOT of talent IMO

They all played pretty well at the O&W game, perhaps not the best, but it does look like a good core. We need Gerald to step up as the "go to" guy though

Our Wide Receiver Core- Quintin Hancock, Gerald Jones, Denarius Moore, Brandon Warren, etc., are the best we have had in some time. Before it’s over I feel they will leave their name with some of the best. Is it possible with a good showing at QB, that they may be the best ever assembled at UT?

You gotta stop smokin out.

This group might be the least talented since the, uhhhhhhhhh,..................

I can't think of a WR corps in Tennessee's history worse. Of course, me only being 18, my UT football memory only goes back around 12-14 years.

It was recent. The Austin Rogers, Lucas Taylor, Josh Briscoe group was not that physically talented. They were effective to an extent. But they are not more talented than this group.

That group of receivers you cited had 182 catches and almost 2200 yards. Taylor in particular had 73 catches for 1000 yards.

The elephant in the room with WR "talent" is always the same. All else being equal the worst receiving corp to ever wear orange would leave the best receiving corp in the dust in receptions and yardage if the former had Manning throwing to them and the latter had Crompton throwing to them. It's just that simple.

Did you read my post. I said they were effective to an extent. But they aren't more physically talented than this group.

I did read your post but perhaps you misunderstood mine. First, #2 in the SEC in receiving yardage is a little above "effective to an extent" IMO. The more important part of my post was the second part though. Too many people directly equate receiver "talent" with production. I pointed out that there is a VERY strong correlation between receiver production and QB play. Would you not agree that there is such a correlation and it is often downplayed if not overlooked?

Quarterback play is the main thing for a receiver. But the reason why I said to an extent was because I remember that year. Our receivers did nothing in the big games(ex: Florida and Bama). Also we couldn't go over the top period with that group. There was not a vertical threat out of the three.

After Lucas' 40 times during the NFL workouts I find it hard to believe that it was the WR's fault we couldn't go deep. I think it had more to do with the OL blocking and Eric Ainge's shoulder.

straight line speed doesn't translate into getting off the line and getting open.

While that's an absolutely factual statement it still doesn't address the QB factor he spoke of. If between fingers and shoulders Ainge couldn't be counted on to accurately throw the ball deep what the receivers could and couldn't do down the field was rendered pretty much moot. Wouldn't you agree?

If you don't know how to set up a DB you will never go deep. People that haven't played WR think that going deep is all just line up and run by the DB. There is an art to running a deep route.

I'm more of a "blame the OL who couldn't hold a block longer than 1sec" type of guy

It seems to me that many say "talent" when they really mean "speed".

Not really because the trio Meachem, Swain, and Smith were not the fastest in the world but they were playmakers. They made plays when the ball was in the air or after the catch. They were big and physical.
