Our Wide Receiver Core- Quintin Hancock, Gerald Jones, Denarius Moore, Brandon Warren, etc., are the best we have had in some time. Before it’s over I feel they will leave their name with some of the best. Is it possible with a good showing at QB, that they may be the best ever assembled at UT?

no. not best ever. but this group can be very good i believe. you go back and look at some of the guys we've had over the years as a group and there's some pretty lofty competition there.

Probably not even in the top 5 UT wide receiver groups in the past ten years regardless of how things work out at QB.

Yes, you may be smoking crack, i.e. dillusional due to rampant smoking of crack cocaine.

This is nowhere near the best WR corp we have seen at UTK. There is some talent at the position. But the talent is only slightly above average for an SEC WR corp. No real gamebreakers in the group. Jones would be the closest thing but we have really never seen it from him in games that count.

"i believe u r smoking crack"

what does that have to do with my post

I believe he's saying your idea of it being the best ever assembled is a bit out there (and I might have to agree). They can be very good but we've had so many great playmakers at WR and it's hard to see these guys being that good.

No offense, but how long have you been following the Vols?

In 1990 we had Alvin Harper, Carl Pickens and Anthony Morgan all of whom were NFL starters.

In 1997 we had Marcus Nash, Peerless Price, Cedric Wilson and Jermaine Copeland, all of whom played pro ball.

I don't think that these guys will get close to that level - and part of it could be limitations from the QB, but even with a great QB this group probably wouldn't out produce either of the groups above.

At this point, I'd be happy with a solid, productive group that plays hard and fast.... but I'm not expecting any superstars.

I have as much optimism as anyone, but this group of receivers is nothing more than serviceable. To answer your question of them being the best ever at UT - no, not even worth consideration.

they lack a real star quality guy, ie meachem, stallworth, price, etc

not a bad group but they need a headliner. i like jones but he hasn't shown the kind of raw speed that separates the great ones from the rest.

Nah. This group of receivers isn't nearly as good as Washington, Stallworth, Graham, and Witten. I mean, 3 of those guys played or are still playing in the NFL.

However, I do think there is lots of talent at WR and TE...and Fulmer couldn't do anything with them because, well, he's FULMER. That's what he did the last 8 years...waste talent.

What Quinten Hancock said was a perfect example. When he accepted his most improved award, he said something like, "Well, I thought I did everything I needed to last year to earn some playing time. I worked harder than anybody, I made plays in practice, but when game time got here, I never got a chance."

Classic Fulmer...

looks like lockdown got a new screenname.

I think the 06 group was better. Meach, Smith, and Swain

Yes, very interesting.

And not to pile on, but Eric Parker and David Martin were multi-year NFL starters who were extremely underutilized while at Tennessee. We had guys receiving much more playing time that never really sniffed the NFL.

Don't really remember a Graham at WR. There was Jay Graham, he was a good player but, he was a Tailback!

Bobby Graham, #11 played in the late 90s, maybe 00 as well. Made game winning catch against Memphis in '99 (thats another fulmer golden nugget) and was a pretty serviceable possession receiver.

pretty sure it was Martin's fault that he was not used much at UT. He wanted to be a WR and the staff wanted him at TE

And in the NFL he is playing TE. So you are right, I would say the staff was accurate in that assessment.

I'll be happy if this group simply contributes and produces a big play every now and then. I'd be shocked if this group went down in Vol history as anything special. Even if they were they'd be hampered by marginal QB and o-line play.

And he was a VERY reliable receiver in '01, his senior year. He was excellent as a 3rd option. Never dropped passes, always open after Clausen made his 2nd or 3rd read.

I think he had almost 100 yards receiving against UF in '01. The DBs were so focused on Washington and Stallworth that Graham was left wide open alot.

I think Moore might qualify for that role. He ran some routes and made some catches in the O&W game that makes me think he's more than just a go route guy now, and he does have wheels.

Yes, he played a different position in the NFL, but would a Saban, Meyer... shoot Lane Kiffin, be content to let an NFL talent dictate and flounder at the wrong position under their watch, or get said player's rear end in the right spot so that he could be better utilized?

Either way, Martin was still an NFL talent that wasn't utilized while at Tennessee.

I think Graham made a critical catch in a ridiculous 3rd and long situation late in the game against South Carolina in 2001.

It was something like 3rd and 21, and he converted to keep the drive alive, and ultimately win a very close game at home.
