Since we basically live in a fantasy world around here and play alot of what if....I begin to wonder......

Say a former Vol player was some up and coming hotshot head coach at another school.....how much higher would the temp be on CPFs seat? How much louder would the out cry be?

A lot more.

Look at Major Applewhite. He'll be coaching Texas when Mack Brown leaves

On one hand, I do think an attractive "family member" might push some of the big money guys to make a change.

On the other hand, I am tired of all the nepotism as it is.

Temp would be higher because they could make it look more politically correct.

Exactly! If Appy State would of had all the recent sucess with Dale Jones as HC......the moving vans would be rolling!

btw this is not a "who do you want as HC" thread.....

Why would Applewhite return to the school that screwed him over? He's a Bammer. He wanted to go to Bama, but Dubose wouldn't give him a contract. He's just buying his time until Saban leaves, even if it's ten years down the road.

I'm not sure it would matter unless we were talking about Manning as the possible replacement.
it would matter HB! it would justify the move in alot of minds....it wouldn't be as much about what Phil had done....it would be more of a we better get this guy before someone else does....

that could be the case anyway, and not involve anyone from the UT family.

not really......the CPF has done so much for us...he deserves better argument wouldn't be near as loud!
if they had brought in an outsider to replace Majors it wouldn't have gone over as well.

Plus if a former Vol went on to coaching greatness somewhere else and we had a shot of getting him....

I've always said that marketing a change will be a lot easier if there is a heir apparent. Since the string has run out for a home boy, we have no hope (or threat as some see it) of a pater familias. The heir apparent does however have to be bona fide in the eyes of the Vol community.

(anyone care to guess what movie was on at my house last night?)

i know....i'm just contending that they really aren't any knockout, slam dunk, home run, UT family candidates out there.

and i believe that if/when this does happen, MH will not make this a prerequisite for holding that position at UTK.

and just for the record, i do agree that it would make it easier, maybe not on the fanbase, but on MH and the boosters that will make that decision if there were a viable UT family candidate worthy RIGHT NOW.

I certainly think that, depending on the player, if there was always a feeling of resentment, in a LEGIT players mind... that CPF was holding them back with his archaic ways, I think that would certainly change a lot.

That would take away the only thing that he's done really well in his time at UT, and that is recruit. If an Al Wilson or a Deon Grant or a Peyton Manning were to say it though. Not Heath Shuler, who choked.

No there are no homegrown candidates or this wouldn't be a what if thread.....the natives would be in an uproar....thats why I started this thread. Hamilton would be feeling much more heat... Under Dickey it would have been a no brainer....I was just curious if MH could be pressured into such a move? Or would he go after his man regardless of the ties? If he passed on a homer and he struck out with his choice... his house would be burnt down!

i don't disagree, and this decision, when it does have to be made, will be MH's biggest challenge. while change is needed, it's not just change that will suffice.

i don't think TN fans are lining up to hand CPF to the wolves to get Ray Goff or Ron Zook reincarnated....so i know what you mean.

which is why i think MH goes outside all together. question is will he have the stones to go after a big money, big name proven commodity, or will he go the route he did with the bball or basket ball coaches and take a chance on more or less unproven mid major commodity?

i don't envy him one bit in that process.

yeah. I see that you were speaking to pure hypotheticals and I was caught inside the box trying to think of any UTK player in recent memory that a vast number of UTK fans, who are otherwise committed to Phil, would happily turn Phil out in order to get. I guess it is possible, but one of the qualities that the diehard Fulmer supporters always refer to when proclaiming the basis for their opinions is his loyalty to the school and his staff. Obviously, it is going to be very difficult to convince people who are willing to tollerate a few losses each year in exchange for loyalty to jump ship, thereby exposing themselves as unloyal hypocrites. It's sort of a Catch-22 for these folks and I think they realize that the only way for them to feel vindicated is to preserve the staus quo at all costs and hope for an eventual turnaround be it this year or 10 years from now. Or maybe I am just overestimating the obstinance of some folks?
