I would like to know what everyone’s opinion is regarding our defensive backfield. I thought this was suppose to be one of TN’s strengths but it doesn’t seem to be the case. It’s loaded with high 4-stars but seems lacking. Is it coaching or a miscalculation in talent? I’m just curious.

The issues right now appear to start and stop with our QB play. Football is an emotional game and with the 3 and outs on top of the turnovers the whole team gets demoralized.

I have no ill will towards JG as I think the pounding he took over several years has really damaged his ability to play QB and he does not need to be put back out there as the season is mostly over and we have to play for the future.

I for one will be terribly troubled if he starts another game. I think the HB years should start now.

Definitely wouldn't let them build my deck...it would be...all the wrong angles.

They seem to have problems communicating with each other AND the sideline. I think this may be a C-19 problem. I know everyone has struggled with this problem, but our guys are almost totally inexperienced. I think they know what to do, just not where to do it!!

OP asked about the secondary. If he wanted to hear about the quarterbacks he could have looked at every other post.

I really don't know if it our secondary or other factors. It could be our defensive line, could be how our linebackers play, could be all the rules that favor passing attacks.

Our safeties are inexperienced but our db’s are nearly three year starters and only one is competent

They have made far too many mistakes, even Shamburger and Thompson.

Hopefully, with the bye week they cleaned that up a sheet ton.

I’m not sure if they are being told to not do this by the coaching staff but it seems like they never jump routes (perhaps also a result of playing zone). I know there is risk involved in doing so but because our offense is so bad, we need to be able to create more turnovers on defense.

I’m saying it’s all interrelated as a football team has parts but they all affect each other with both momentum and rest.

Emotions have a huge effect in a football team and can make a good team great or a good team bad.

That is my opinion based on my experience playing the game.

I think our DBs are trying to cover for our lack of an experienced replacement for Daniel Bituli which weakens the defense, the inside and the outside.

My opinion is it doesn’t matter how good your dbs are, if you can’t pressure the qb, and give him a lot of time they will pick you apart. Also we have a really hard time covering the slant. Lbs and safeties alike.

After reading how they are coordinating defensive play calling, I can see why the DBs look confused on a regular basis.

That being said, they are soft, leave plays on the field, and take some horrible angles.

There is a reason everyone is throwing over the middle on TN, none of the opposing wide receivers are worried about getting hit.

We need to give those WRs something to worry about. You have to punish them and we just haven't really done that.

Is the above statement from rockytop989 an accurate description of how you feel about the EconVol92 response?

Injuries and missed games have been brutal to our Secondary group. Thompson playing with a torn pec has to be brutal. Alontae has missed a game, Shamburger 2, George is coming on, Tank is getting better I feel. I think if they get healthy this off weak they'll be fine.

Idk man I think you still redshirt bailey and start Maurer. Like you said, since the season is already shot, why run your prize horse in a washout? I would rather him be a redshirt freshman starting next year than a true sophomore starting next year.

Our LB in my opinion need to show up and better cover the middle. Slants have been way to easy to complete

I have heard that 80% of pass defense is pass rush. Some coach said that.
