If CDM is correct (i generally find him spot on), then I find his assessment demoralizing, depressing, and disturbing. Weve had 4 recruiting classes since CBJ has taken over and yet we STILL do not have right personnel! Think on that for a moment. How long does it take to find fast, strong DBs with nasty attitudes? Meanwhile UGA, AU, UA continue to vacuum up loads of 4 and 5 star talent.

What the heck are we supposed to do?

Blame it on injuries. It's the safe space of Vol Nation for some. :) JK

Losing Sutton hurt big time. This secondary is abysmal without him.

These guys are constantly out of position, can't high point a pass, and are walking pass interference calls. Honestly think they are lucky they haven't had a lot more called on them.

Whether it's a problem in recruiting or coaching them up, it's on this staff to correct it.

First off, Jennings isn't our only offensive playmakers. Malone has more catches, many more yards and many more touchdowns.

Secondly, as Mathews argued, Jennings touches the ball on average, less than 3 times per game....that's it. Conversely, if he's playing safety, he'd have 70-75 opportunities to make a play/have impact on defense as opposed to only being able to make a play on offense when he is targeted by our qb, which is virtually never.

So ultimately it's a tradeoff proposal. Jennings has impacted essentially two games this season at WR, vs Florida and Georgia, and it was great impact to be sure. But what could he do, how could he impact/help improve a porous, generally uathletic defensive secondary that desperately needs help? The same question goes double for Byrd who has all of 13 catches in 10 games.

Either way you spin it, Jennings is being wasted.

3 plays a game on offense is pitiful for a play maker like Jennings.

If DeBord or whoever is calling the shots for Jones next season can't do any better than that, may as well give him a shot on defense. He certainly has the attitude and makeup for it.

FWIW, our secondary's interception rate is the lowest since 2009:

Opp. passes per INT

* 2016: 78
* 2015: 54
* 2014: 27
* 2013: 39
* 2012: 41
* 2011: 61
* 2010: 34
* 2009: 79
* 2008: 22
* 2007: 45

I don't know how many passes were thrown against us in 1970 when I was a U.T. student, but Bobby Majors had 10 INT and Tim Priest had 9 INT, and the team had 36 total . That's 3 a game. Every time I looked up, Majors or Priest would be heading toward the goal line.

Edit: I'm going to guess that we intercepted 1 out of 10 thrown.
