At some point this year due to injury.

2007 (Ainge played whole year w broken pinky) and Dobbs’ last 2 years are the only times since C. Clausen that we’ve not gone to backup QB at some point. And multiple times Jones had to go to 3rd string because his line and stupid offense about got his QB killed.

Amazing stat. The last time Alabama started a backup QB was in 2004 when Croyle went down. Saban is gonna figure out a way to keep Hurts on the team, cause they’re screwed if neither of them are available.

Fulmer had amazing luck as far as QB Health was concerned with Manning and Martin. He never really had a backup ready to play. He did however do a good job of managing the situation when Colquitt went down.

I would be very surprised if we don’t see both #1 and #2 qb’s get plenty of play. CJP will want to see as much video as he can on both. At some point he will name #1, but it may take a game or two. I know I want to see both in a real game!

I'm trying to think back...Did Crompton miss a start in 2009?

With the new redshirt rule I expect to see 3 QB's play but not due to injury. JG and KC will get game snaps to see who plays better during games. Shrout will get some mop up to see where he is but won't play in more than 4 games.

Absolutely this.

If one of the lads had separated himself in fall camp, we'd have heard about it by now.

Not having separated by this point, they likely won't be far apart by game time on 1 September.

Therefore, we'll see both JG and KC in the West Virginia game. And maybe the two games after that.

By Florida at latest, we'll have a clear starter.

EDIT: amend that. By UTEP, we'll have a clear starting QB. Jeremy won't want the Florida game to be the starter's first game as The Man. So he'll pull the trigger by UTEP at latest.

You would be correct, once Colquitt went down, I’m sure I’m not the only one that thought at the time, that Helton wouldn’t last long. It was either Manning and Stewart at that point.

It wasn’t so much luck as it was Fulmer was an O-line guy and we always had good o-lines with him as coach

Nobody can say for sure who is going to have to play because of injury. Manning, Shuler and Martin played pretty much injury free. Every year is different, the main thing is to have a backup ready versus not. GBO!!!!!

Helton came in a and played very well. Just like when Robinson went down and a serviceable Dickey came in mid season and led us to the Sugar Bowl. Actually in the past we have had backups come in a do good jobs in a pinch over the years. GBO!!!!

He did what he needed to do, and not to take away from him at that time. Just had a feeling that it was Stewart vs Manning to take over. Just my opinion at the time. I didn’t have the benifit of this board to tell me otherwise.

In many cases good QB play means simply not making THE big mistake. No turnovers, throwing the ball out of bounds rather than losing yards or taking a sack. Understanding punting and going 3 and out with short yardage left over is better than turning the ball over with a risky play. Take what the defense gives and let the game come to you all are helpful. No need to make a big splash if it's unnecessary and you get the W. Tee Martin has a UT NC ring not because he was the flashiest, best, or most talented QB to play on The Hill. He was mostly successful as he rarely made THE big mistake and let the team succeed.

As I recall, Helton did OK and did not get benched for the freshmen; but they saw the field after he got injured too.

Hurts isn't leaving till December at the earliest. He graduates in December and isn't leaving till then. Then he can transfer anywhere and play immediately plus also graduate. He's already come out and said that.

I think Crompton played the whole year that Kiffin was here. Bray started every game in 2012 also. But we've definitely had our share of QB injuries.

If two QB's play with the 1's then that's the worst case scenario for this team. It means either the coaches are indecisive, someone got hurt, or someone played poorly. Under Jones... almost everyone missed games with injuries. Hopefully Pruitt continues to be MUCH better at that.
