I think proper perspective is needed by MANY on this site.

Is OU a big game? Yes it is because it's against a ranked team but mainly (IMO) because it's one of only a few games we get each season.

The OU game is nowhere near as important as games against
UF
UGA
Alabama
Arky
South Carolina

If we beat OU and lose to these teams our season is nowhere near as successful as if we lose to OU and beat those teams. Especially the SEC East teams.

Win or lose this game is NOT a must win and is NOT a be all end all game.

Like I said we only get 12 to 13 games each year to watch our beloved Vols. Don't let yourself get so caught up in the hype that one game ruins your season.

Now show up to the game and be loud and proud and support these guys who have given their all to OUR University.

GBO!!!!!!

Well said Reader. It's not a must win, but the guys need to be competitive for 4 Q's to consider it improvement. If the Vols are able to pull off a win, the Hype train is going to be moving at the speed of light.

I agree completely. Beating OU doesn't make or break our season, but it does go a long way in building confidence for a young team as we prepare for a long SEC season.

Exactly. Win or lose this is NOT the most important game we have.

Reader, that's the perspective of a person who in their mind has already lost.

Dare to care deeply. Dare to wear your heart right out there on your sleeve. Dare to risk the heartache of a loss felt down in the bones, in exhange for a victory so deeply desired that it is a joy just to contemplate.

No, this isn't a hugely important game for reaching our team goals. But it's hugely important to the program nonetheless.

Don't go through life wearing shades of grey. Grab some hope and hang on tight.

agreed. and i'll be completely honest, i share the OP's perspective 100%.

i'm in full on "show me" mode. Please, show me. i want to believe. but i won't let myself. yet.

just being honest. this season would be so much more fun if we do win this game. it makes every other game we play that much more relevant. and that's all i want for this team, and this program. can we be relevant for a prolonged amount of time during the season. but if we do lose, the season isn't over.

Go Vols.

I am glad you have been elected to tell everyone what their perception should be for a football game. Why don't you tell us all how we should vote in 2016.

if we win, and i think we will, I am so glad we don't play Florida the following week. That could be disastrous. Let's win this week. Get the arrogance out of our systems the following. Then fly down and crush some gators.

I'm old enough to remember the days back when we didn't speculate on the outcome of games. We KNEW We were going to win. After a decade of being beaten down, It seems like we already accept defeat before the game even happens. Every game to me is a must win. This one just might help put us back on the path to those days of confidence once again. That's why it's being hyped so much.

I'm old enough as well. But I also realize where this team is THIS year. I predicted 8 wins and stand by it. Hope it's more and very well could be. Next season is the year. I expect great things. Most on this very site did as well until SEC media days clouded their minds.

Goals can be met without beating OU...for sure. I believe those goals become much more attainable by beating OU. This team, this fanbase, needs this win badly. If we lose we head into the SEC wondering....are we good enough? If we win, especially impressively, then we head into the SEC confident that we can handle our business with anyone else on the schedule. That can turn this young, thin, this team into something special. I'm looking for a team like the 89 team, who rebounded from 5-6 the year before.

It also sets a tone at home....Neyland can suddenly become feared again. Anyone who attended home games during the 98 season can attest....it was tough on visitors.

It's not. In the grand scheme of things, this game is really just another game. But to some fans who believe that this is an important game, who are you or I for that matter to argue with their logic or their perspective? The thing that makes our fan base so great is their passion and the perspective they have every Saturday morning when they get out of bed and pull together for a team that means something to them. Whether or not their feelings mirror yours or mine is meaningless. Will this game have a great bearing on our season? Well the answer to this question is different for others, and I respect what it means to them as I hope they respect what this game and this team means to me.

Discussing and debating is exactly what this site is for.
Where did I say to not have passion? Read my post again and you will see where I said be LOUD and proud.

Thanks for sharing YOUR perspective. I'm 100% positive that our team has a goal and it is to win this game. Thanks for the pep talk Coach. You may have saved a few mattresses with this insight.

You also said "proper perspective is needed by many on this site". I don't recall ever saying that you said to not have passion. But while were on that topic, how can you disseminate perspective and passion? when clearly passion is what drives perspective. Are you asking a fan to be passionate? Or are you telling them they are not passionate enough to see things how you see them?

Really? That's surprising that the team has that goal. Thanks for the update.

I'm talking about the "this is a must win" mentality.
If we lose this game there will be idiots all over this site. My post is an effort to bring a level headed approach to this game. That's all.

Right. Florida and UGA are bigger. This is a pretty big game for momentum and media exposure. The media is finally starting to pick us again. Last time that happened, we laid a goose egg against UF and they've been gun shy ever since to pick us. The media and polls have had a wait and see approach on UT, but a win would mean crazy national exposure.
