I really think Bailey is the safety net should James leave after one season. If James stays you would still have a pretty potent one two punch with combos of James Bailey and K Johnson. Should James leave you have room to add Love or equiv. PG but you have experienced leadership at the point. Looks pretty logical to me.
Should be a good replacement for SchofieldI agree and Bailey is bigger than I thought he was, when I say bigger, I mean more muscle and thickness. Looks physical and finishes strong at the rim. Figure in this kid's 3-point shot and 90+% at the line and I'm really pleased. Still want Love or Springer in '20, tho
When does Barnes have to stop "proving" that he knows what he is doing, though? It really does seem like Barnes is recruiting using what I'd call a "successional plan". If he somehow manages to make the NCAAT this year after losing such a tremendous amount of talent, I'll be a firm believer in his approach. Add to that what might be one helluva 2020 recruiting class and it will be hard to contain the excitement not to mention expectations.
I searched for (and found) reasons to like him until his recent contract power play. Now I just don't like him. When does Barnes have to stop "proving" that he knows what he is doing, though?
Originally, people were upset he wasn't raking in 4 and 5* talent on day one. The cries that he had no idea how to coach and was just retreating under his golden parachute was a popular myth, and all he did was recruit and coach up a group that had the best 2-year run in school history.
Once that fallacy was disproven, then it was can he translate that success into more talent. In steps multiple 4 and 5* players like Josiah James, ORN, Corey Walker, Victor Bailey, most likely Keon Johnson, etc. All unproven pieces, but that is true for everyone. Victor Bailey could be our next Scooter McFadgon or JP Prince. He could flop. I'll trust Barnes and staff to coach him.
It just feels like some people are looking for reasons not to like the guy, or at least some justification for it. Now he has to make the NCAAT with his current crop to curry favor with people and "earn their trust" that he knows what he is doing.
What's next?
Just sit back and enjoy our team.
I suspect these feelings will subside when we keep winning? I don’t understand why folks fault a guy for getting a pay day. More than anything it elevates perception that UT is strongly committed to b-ball, so, when the next coaching search rolls around in years to come, we will get much more attention as being a top tier program vs having to settle, like we have done too much in past. I’d rather over pay Barnes and keep him vs not have him and have to go thru trying to get the right guy...againI searched for (and found) reasons to like him until his recent contract power play. maybe he will be another NBA wonder but after two years with the Ducks, which aren't a bad program, IDK. We will see. I just don't like the idea of using roster spots for question mark players. if RIck is worth top 5 money then the Admins should of factor in we are attracting top 5 talent. right now we have 1.He and his coach must of had a falling out which would explain his drop in minutes and the reason he is leaving the ducks.
If how much a coach is paid equates to the level of talent he will or should attract, why aren't more admins paying top dollar? One has nothing to do with the other.maybe he will be another NBA wonder but after two years with the Ducks, which aren't a bad program, IDK. We will see. The question was when does Barnes have to stop proving that he knows what he's doing, not what does he have to do to make you like him. If you don't like him because he parlayed a great season into a pay raise that has no effect on you, personally...well, then you are just easily offended and probably naive to believe Rick Barnes does this job just because he loves it.I searched for (and found) reasons to like him until his recent contract power play. Now I just don't like him.
That really is ignorant. If Rick could take the Tennessee intramural champs and win 25 games, why would you care who he did it with? Winning is winning. When Barnes fails to win, then it will make sense to criticize the cast of characters he is attempting to do it with.maybe he will be another NBA wonder but after two years with the Ducks, which aren't a bad program, IDK. You do not "like" the idea...lol
This thread is pure gold as all these keyboard coaches and scouts pontificate...I will stick with Barnes and crew who have actually demonstrated many times over they know exactly what they are doing.
