only Butch Jones...

So you are one of those he drives nuts. I don't recall Neyland being great at pressers either. What do you want, someone who is rebuilding a program left in shambles or an orator? Just who do you think he is blaming for the losses?
what?

i want someone that gets it. he doesn't. thought he did. i was wrong.

i want a guy that understands what expectations really are, not just a cliche or something to put on a resume.

it's like just having the expectation is the achievement.

I think Jones, knowing that in all likelihood having finished a regular season at 9-3 and his job secure, is having some fun with the less stable members of the fan base.

even if that were true, you think that bodes well for him?

Come on man. While he's not getting fired, he knows this season was a disappointment and he's just deflecting. It's like he can't admit a failure to meet expectations.

what expectations? we won 8 games, and we're going to a bowl. mission accomplished.

9-3? You betcha.

you and both know that only lasts so long, especially when at every opportunity you remind everyone that we should just be happy that he's not Derek Dooley.

over a long enough time line, he'll alienate the rest of the fan base. save winning a national title.

and mr. "8 wins is good enough" doesn't seem to have a clue about how to do that.

Yeah, and Im sure he thought he was sitting good in the east going into Columbia as well. Stability is ironic.

could make a season that we could go to the Sugar Bowl, make me hate the guy. at this point i'm fine with him not doing post game or weekly pressers.

can he please hire a PR guy? i swear, i think if he just had a clue on how to communicate in a manner that didn't drive every one nuts, a lot of people wouldn't be on his back right now.

do you know how bad this fan base and this program wants to support a coach that just beat GA and FL, and may get TN to the Sugar bowl for the first time in 27 years? that guy has 1/2 the fan base hating him? REALLY???? think about that.

the fact that it doesn't, or that it's split at best, tells you a lot about the kind of damage this coach has done by simply putting his foot in his mouth. personally, i don't think i can stand it anymore. i think a lot of people could handle the game day issues, not winning the East, the USCe game if he just came out said ANYTHING other than what he does say. he needs to be seen as a part of the fans, not constantly trying to spin everything in to something it's not. it's worse than some politicians.

own it. stop telling me that basically i should just be happy with not having Dooley anymore. we're not as dumb as some of his comments imply we are. we know where we were, where we've been, and where we are...afterall the vast majority of us were fans of this program long before he ever set foot in the joint.

either he's completely two faced on what he says in public to what he feels privately, or he has absolutely no clue what it takes to be a coach at a program like this. 8 wins or going to a bowl is just not the standard, and not only is it ok to be disappointed in not winning the East, YOU SHOULD BE.

there's a lot i like about Butch. but there's a lot i don't like. and he's making it hard to remember the stuff i do like.

Not everyone has OCD and is bothered by his press conferences. You make a mistake in thinking that most are like you when we are in fact not.

Yes, critical thinkers like Jake are much harder to come by than blind followers.

turn on a TV, listen to a radio. i'm not the only one.

what he's done post game saturday is nothing short of an embarrassment.

Not when it is on him. Dooley was frequently bashed for making excuses and throwing players under the bus.... Jones does it as a matter of habit.

no one is talking about beating FL or GA or VT....no one is talking about 8 wins. no one is talking about going to a bowl. no one is talking about Sugar bowls.

the only thing being talked about regarding TN football is what CBJ says at a presser...and it's not in the best light. that's not really even debatable right now.

if some of you don't see that as part of a problem, that's fine. but ignoring it doesn't make it any less true.

i've said several times since my original post, it shouldn't matter, and i wish i was one of the ones that didn't care.

but the reality is simple...he doesn't understand that context and intent simply don't matter in today's day and age. that's not his fault, but it is his fault for not being aware of it, or accounting for it in how he communicates. and as well intentioned as he very well may be, he continues to miss the mark when it comes to displaying attributes one needs to possess to captain a ship like this. so whether it be "the chart said to do this", or any of the many things people have taken issue with in the past (which in large part i defended up to this point), he continues down the same path, full steam ahead.

I don't have a single problem with the notion that we should be extremely proud of this senior group. i don't have a single issue with the notion that 8 wins and a bowl is a "good" season.

but at a program like TN, where expectations are greater than that, you can acknowledge all of that in a manner that doesn't so over inflate it to the point that it's a joke, which is what it's become.

and as someone that represents my school, i think it's fair to expect that person to do so in a manner, even in a season where goals weren't met, that we could, and should, be proud of, regardless of the results on the field.

Again very well put.

I could truly give a rat's a$$ about what he says at the pressers. I'm capable of reading a transcript. His message as a whole and intentions are a-ok with me.

But when there are links on my flipboard to stories containing nothing but the meme's that have been made and wiki-page adjustments I can see that he needs to seriously address his PR relations.

If a story teller at a middle school assembly reading from an antiquated book keeps using the Old Oxford adjective "gay" to describe "happy, joyfully, or mirth", the kids will of course laugh and become disruptive. When the story teller chastises the students and lectures them on the importance of literature the story teller then happens to allianate the students, as the majority of the students already knew what it meant. When the parents of the few dense kids that didn't actually grasp the outdated meaning of the word later come back and blow it out off proportion "dat darn school told my boy it ok to be gay"!

It has become an issue that needs to be addressed.

Am I annoyed with the students? Yeah a little, but I don't blame them. The story teller's sanctimonious presentation actually did make it kinda funny. The idiot story teller who couldn't articulate or paraphrase better is to blame.

So I'm annoyed with several pages full of memes, name calling, and knee jerk reactions on this thread before someone finally posted the transcript of what Butch actually said in regards to Life Championship. I'm not blaming Volnation though, some of the memes were actually funny, and it epitomizes the points the OP made. I blame Butch.

Butch keeps putting his foot in his mouth and setting this up over and over.

He has got to learn to articulate his ideas better and he probably needs professional PR help to do so.

All in all I think the actual effect this has on our long term prognosis is trifle if it's addressed before next season. Lou Houltz could barely enunciate his stupidity and he kept going with it for years. I don't want these instances to continue escalating and keep having a circus after every press conference though.

I dont know that I disagree with you so much as I think it is a non-factor. Saban acts like a horses arse at press conferences , occasionally cursing , yelling at media members , critiquing there questions as dumb or stupid , refusing to answer ect. They build a statue of him. Because he wins. Spurrier used winning as a platform to make fun of his opponents and was disinterested when they lost. Holtz said everybody was going to beat them and then acted lucky and surprised when they won. No one cared ...they won.

This notion and expectation that we are an elite program is silly. We have a long and storied history but have won 2 legit titles in 60 some odd years ..there were a few arguable titles we could claim. We had a great run in the 90's but we were UFs little brother almost every year except 98. Manning was Manning ...but lets not forget when he laid that egg at Memphis.

So in the big picture , this is historically a good solid year for UT football. I too hope that we become the elite program that we were in the 90's and can one day achieve the levels of success Alabama ( who dominated us until they were placed on probation in the 90's) But it is going to take awhile.

this program is the 2nd winningest program in the SEC, has more SEC titles than anyone not named Alabama. top 5 all time winningest programs nationally, top 5-7 in bowl games and wins.

i think it's perfectly fine to expect the hc of a program like that to act like a captain of that ship. and the comparisons to SAban Spurrier and holtz don't hold water, because nationally they had something Butch doesn't....credibility.

there's a reason his nick name is "captain cliche". much like those other three earned their credibility, so has Butch earned his......

and again, it's not the comment itself, and it's not the message he's trying to get out.

it's the complete lack of awareness on his part, and what seems to be an absolute refusal to even try and address it.

it's' just embarrassing.

So that life champion comment was real?

Yes; but as more than one poster on here has pointed out, he was talking about this year's graduating class. It is amazing how a statement intended to be complimentary can be reduced to something less when taken completely out of context.

Please, all of you: STFU. The coach isn't going anywhere. I'm tired of hearing a bunch of rednecks whining about the coach. Yea, we didn't quite meet expectations this year--but we've had a vast number of injuries and we'd just get waxed by bama again even if we were going to Atlanta. The bottom line is that the program has improved significantly over the last three/four years. Be thankful for that, eat your turkey at mom's house, hop in your honking big truck and head home, go to sleep and wake up tomorrow with a newfound determination not to yap about Jones--as you have for the last freakin' two weeks.

I'll "stfu" when Jones proves he's worthy of being UT HC.... when he coaches at a championship level. Until then... get used to it or suffer it. I really don't care.

After the SC loss I wish he would've just said Look, we shat the bed, highlighted the weak points and mistakes and talked about the loss like a regular guy.
