I’ve been watching college football for 40 years, and the most elusive aspect of coaching for me is the whole “ready to play” notion.

I’m not talking about being a NC contender, I’m just taking about getting the best you got every week.

Obviously, you may think of Saban or Dabo, but there are lots of coaches who don’t win at the elite level that do it. I think of Gary Pinkel was at Mizzou. Sure, they were going to lose games because they could barely recruit to compete in the Big 12, much less the SEC, but he seemed to put the same team on the field every week for years. He just didn’t lose many games he shouldn’t.

Butch Jones was horrible and Pruitt seems to be leaning that way. What is the magic formula to get guys to stay focused, compete through adversity, and give their all every week?

Is it preparation?
Is it recruiting a certain intangible?
Is it being a speak maker?

I am truly perplexed why some teams have a Jekyll and Hyde personality.

I think it is obvious that there is a huge culture problem at UT. It started developing in Fulmer’s last years and has deepened with each bad coaching hire.
