OldTimer’s Dugout - Off Topic Thread

My Dad lived and worked there for 40 years. He swears that there has never been a beautiful woman born in the state of WestVirginia. If you see one they definitely moved in from somewhere else. He thinks they are more backward than the gumps. I personally like West Virginia. I mean they did produce Jesco White and the wonderful Whites of West Virginia. Great entertainment
My entire family originated from WV. My dad played baseball at Morris Harvey in Charleston and my mother went to nursing school at Marshall in Huntington. My parents were raised in Mingo County, home of coal country and the Hatfields/McCoys. My grandmother was a McCoy.

My dad was born in Dingess where you had to go thru a train tunnel to get to the holler. If you were a “foreigner” and came thru the tunnel, they’d shoot at you! My grandfather was stabbed after a basketball game because he changed high schools and played for a rival team. My great grandmother wanted him to go thru 12th grade, not just the local 11th grade. Townspeople didn’t like that, They would hide moonshine in the well and crank it down when the “law” showed up. My great grandparents were part of the Matewan mine wars with the union and the feds. Some of the stories I heard over the years were hard to believe at times.

There are a lot of small colleges in WV, but EVERYONE is a Mountaineer!

West, by God, Virginia!

Well, depending on where you are moving in E TN you may hear some crazy ones about your new home place too. Google The Battle of Athens for some shoot em up days.

One of our kids earned two degrees from WVU, so we spent a good deal of time in the state, particularly in Morgantown. We encountered very nice people and wonderful beauty. There’s also poverty, but I’ve seen poverty everywhere. We love the state.

There are no pro teams in the state, so most people (IMO, sorry, @VolGirl81) gravitate towards WVU. I think there are two D1 baseball teams in West Virginia, and North Carolina has 18 (per Google), by comparison.

Well, that was quite the read, I had no idea! Not something they teach in Virginia history lol. Actually, we will be just northwest of Athens, along the Tennessee River, assuming everything works out. 🙏🏼
