To the studio's surprise, this 1951 release went on to become one of the three best sci-fi movies of the entire decade. Bernard Herrmann (of Hitchcock fame) did the music, and was the first to use a Theramin in the soundtrack. The original (1951) holds up much better than the 2008 Keanu Reeves remake.
The director, Robert Wise, was a non-practicing Jew and thought he was making an anti-war movie. Only after it was released did someone point out to him that it was filled with Messianic references and allusions.

Today it takes on yet another layer of interest, as we consider the feasibility of a society monitored and controlled by AGI.
