Assam is the area in India where the tea is grown. It’s a terroir. Assam is in the far northeast, on the China border. It is very hot and humid there. Assam-grown tea has a pronounced malty taste. That sounds good. Is that the brand?
I order by internet from an Indian company called Teabox. It’s a summer harvest tea so the 2025s are just starting to come in.
If you see Irish breakfast tea at the store, it will include Assam in the mix. Just try some breakfast teas — English, Scottish, or Irish — and see how you like it. Even regular ole Lipton is pretty good imo, but the labeled “breakfast teas” will be a little stronger.
Teabox sells tea straight from Indian tea estates. There’s a $55 dollar minimum to get free shipping. That’s a lot of money for someone who has never tried a breakfast tea at all. Another truly great Indian tea terroir are the one’s from Darjeeling. Those teas come from the foothills of the Himalayas. A better afternoon tea. Prolly the most famous tea type in the world, although I’m sure the Chinese would beg to differ.
I would first try whatever breakfast tea is at your grocer. If you like it, try Bewley’s or Thompson’s Punjab from Amazon. Great Irish blends that will use more Assam than the others. Then, if you’re really feeling it, order straight from India for 100% Assam.
