OL Rotation

The cream should rise to the top. I too like this. We still need Sheriron Jones to chastise this bunch when they are failing miserably. Truly a 12th man vs. VT.

How is this going to impact Dobbs and the throw game?
My theory is Debord becomes more conservative and we attempt < 20 passes.

We need Big Charles. Seems everyone the coaches brag on have deficiencies so since you don't hear Charles Mosley name come up he must be the best we have.

Thought that first quote was from a ValleyGirl until I saw it was attributed to DeBord...."Like, you know, what-EVER".....

It's a little alarming to see our coaches completely scrap what seemed to be a pretty hardline philosophy of "finding and playing our best 5 OL". Why the sudden 180? I thought we saw our "best 5" last week when they pulled Coleman, slid Wiesman to center and put Jones in at guard. What's going on up there? It's as though they don't like who their best 5 OL are so they've just thrown they're hands up and are now saying "step right up, everybody plays"....

The reason no one else does it.... is that it hasn't worked for anyone else. Communication, trust, being in sync, etc are too important for an OL.

Jones likes Thomas. He always has. I think you and I may have been on the same page when he was playing fairly bad at RT but still playing instead of Kendrick who appeared to play better when he got his chances. I don't know how much of this has to do with changing philosophy or avoiding what seems to be obvious.... The OL doesn't play well with both Thomas and Richmond on the field.

On the positive side, Jack Jones needs to be in there and never come out. Maybe nothing more than aggression.... but they all seemed to get better when he went in whether Richmond or Thomas were still in.

i can't believe this wasn't identified at any point in the spring, summer or fall camps, and that there's not a legitimate pecking order, and a back up plan.

if our season goes in the toilet because the O line regresses, that's 100% all on the coaches. no excuse.

Literally everybody I've spoken or listened to this weekabout the VT game....from common fans like me to beat writers/media members/college football analysts....had the same take....our OL play improved dramatically with Thomas out and Jones in.

The embarrassing, disruptive, constant bull rush and physical domination from much smaller, less talented players getting great push through the A gaps stopped and our offense functioned much better. Not sure what Jones' obsession with Thomas is, but IMHO, Coleman's first 5 lackadaisical, feckless, uninspired quarters of play has earned him the right to be buried on the OL depth chart with little to no playing time in the foreseeable future.

I honestly didn't pay as much attention to Richmond's or Kendrick's play at tackle, although I've heard everyone pretty much universally pan Drew's efforts and say that he just isn't ready. It's amazing and downright unlucky that we've been nearly injury free thus far but the only 2 we've really had are at the 2 positions we could least afford, OT and MLB. Sure hope Hall gets back soon so that we can add him to the mix and see what happens.

Well, that's what everyone is telling him to do...run Dobb's more. It works in the short term, but sooner or later teams are just going to stop Dobb's (possibly in a bad way) and then what? We are going to have to challenge ourselves as a team and a nation. We are going to have to confront our faults and get better. I say, lets see what the rest of our game looks like.

I'm not the one that has the responsibility of career, student athlete, family, and volnation on my shoulders though. Digging into the youth on this team means we may have to wait another year to see the results. Butch may not have that much time. Preseason hype and fanatics have put the impetus on NOW. That means playing a more conservative and controllable game.

Too much cross training and no specialization. The cohesion could not be established since the coaches were trying to find the best 5 and still looking.

I wonder if the coaches have even considered moving a D-lineman to offense? Mr. Bain is listed at 290... Just saying....

I agree about Thomas at C.

But he actually held up decently at RT (albeit with limited reps). Given Richmond's HUGE struggles thus far, I'm hoping to see more of the lineup we ran with last week that had
Kendrick
Robertson (though honestly I'd like to see Boulware or somebody else get a shot here if Robertson doesn't improve)
Wiesman
Jones
Thomas

At least until Hall is back.

Richmond may be able to improve quickly due to his youth and lack of real experience.

People are excusing Thomas due to an injury that he may be playing with but this isn't unlike what we have seen from him at times before.... especially when he was playing RT.

Both seem to be "thinking" at time rather than playing.

You are probably right.

Sometimes having a timely decision is more important as having the absolute "best" possible decision. If they had chosen a starting 5 early then established back ups and THEN work on cross training.... they may have been working as a unit now.

Very good point you make.

Good post. Hopefully Robertson starts looking like the player he was before.

I think UT is OK with Thomas or Richmond but not both.... until Hall comes back of course. Then I'd like to see how a line up with neither plays.

However.... if I had to bet money.... I suspect that Kendrick will be the odd man out. Jones seems to have never liked him while he loves Thomas.

IMHO, they have the athletes to build an effective OL. It all comes down to personnel decisions.
